I feel that it depends on the age and maturity of the child. When my son was seven years old, I explained to him about the meaning of love. I told him that before he could really love someone. He first must love himself. This means that he needs to take good care of his body and respect himself. He needs to put himself above anyone else first. And I went on to explain that there are different levels to love. He loves his mommy and daddy different than his favorite toy or vacation place. I think it's so important that when you sit down to talk with your child about love. You will have shown how to by example. You first have to love yourself to really be capable of loving someone else.
