I recently got back to finishing Fullmetal Alchemist as I did not watch it much when it aired on Television. After watching all episodes to the original series I decided I might as well look into the Brotherhood series. Without researching what the series was about I jumped right into the show. What I did notice by the first two episodes that I actually watched was fillers. The scene which involves Edward throwing off his cape in the dessert village corruptly controlled by Father was different from the original series. I did not get that same feeling while watching Brotherhood that I had watching the original. You know, that slow motion cape throw that is supposed to show the body-work that was caused from the forbidden alchemy, Human Transmutation. Maybe I am just overlooking this, but it was that scene that caused me to instantly quit watching Brotherhood. What are your thoughts on this? Is Brotherhood just fill-ins that weren't in the original, or is there more to the show?

I agree with the scene showing Edward's body-work. It doesn't have the same feeling, and neither did the Maes vs Envy scene. The Brotherhood series begins with some of the same things that happened in the first series, but it will go on a different path, and things will be very different. Examples are that Barry the Chopper will have a different role, and some of the homunculus will be different. The Brotherhood series also has a badass scene of Roy Mustang coming to the rescue of Alphonse and Hawkeye.

Thanks for your input on this subject. So, it seems the two series should be treated separately being characters do not play the same role. If I get back to Brotherhood, I'll keep that in mind. I can't imagine Barry playing a different role. "What would FMA be like without this insane criminal?" is what I say to that. Your comment about Mustang's badass scene influences me to proceed with he rest of Brotherhood because "badass scenes" is what I'm all for.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brother follows what was intended to be in the storyline, it followed closely with the development in the manga. The first Fullmetal Alchemist, wasn't even canon, except the first, until the anime got passed the manga, so they had to make an alternate story, until the manga finished and they released Brotherhood

Well, both Fullmetal Alchemist and FMA Brotherhood are pretty good in my opinion. But the thing we have to take into consideration is that Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood follows the manga more closely than the first one which deviated with the whole traveling through the gate and ending up in Germany thing. The first series had to go that route because the manga was still ongoing at the time. So, no Brotherhood isn't a fill-in at all. I would recommend the manga if you haven't already read it yet. Then you'd understand more of the Brotherhood series.

I'm still finishing the first part of this series. Season two is already out and I can't wait to watch it. I really love this anime though the main character Edward is not so cool to me. Anyway it is the story that made this anime my favorite. I prefer watching it with English sub though than watching it in television.

I personally prefered brotherhood, but it takes a few episodes for its story to take shape
