how to develop a a high rank website?

I am in the process of learning, and would share some of the things I had learned. I hope if you have nice way to get your site. ranked do share with me too.
get your site index by submission to search engine. This is really a no brainer, your site would eventually get indexed but if you want to do fast, submit an invitation for them to crawl in your site.
Submit to directory like dmoz, the thing to take note is to submit to category that has editor else your submission might not be seen at all.
Of course you would want to build links, currently I am trying to get my links to as many places as possible.
There are other way like article directories. and video submittion which I am not too well verse yet. perhaps someone can guide me with this, I hope to learn more from the people here.

There is a lot to do when starting a new site especially in regards to getting it up there in the search engines and driving traffic to it. I have a couple of new sites and I ended up paying someone to promote them for me as it is too much hard work. I have already been there and done that!

Maybe I can help you a little bit from my experiences..
1. Submit your site in search engine submissions (it most important thing)
2. Use sitemap in your site to make it more easy to crawl by search engines
3. Make article with clearly title and make some backlins your article. If your article contain some images, be sure give your pic tag and alt
4. Link exchanges
5. Put many tags
6. Be sure not to using many flash image, cause it's not crawl by search engine
7. Use site like Digg, Del.ici.us and any other to make some backlink to your site/article.
8. Active promote your site in forum.
9. Always update your site with new article :)
