Since runners impact the ground with far more force and torsion than a walker, their scientifically designed shoes are built to absorb the impact and provide support. The sole is inflexible and rigid. The interior of the shoe provides cushioning and padding. The extra padding helps prevent tendon pain and heel spurs.
Walking shoes provide support for side to side motion, according to drpribut.com, and have a flexible sole. This allows the walker to roll from heel-to-toe in a natural motion. Walking shoes are heavier than running shoes, since speed is not an issue. There is little impact involved in walking, so the flexibility of the shoe is enhanced by less padding.
Neither walking nor running shoes are "better." Walking and running are different activities and require different equipment. Pick the shoe that best suits your activity. Walking requires flexibility, and running requires support.
