Strange Habits

I think that all people have something strange that they do on a regular basis. And I'm really interested in what kinds of strange habits that other members of the community have and the reasons that they thing that they've picked up these strange habits.
I'll start with my own. The main level of our house is set up in a circle and my husbands and my bedroom is a converted garage that is just off of the dining room. So, when I wake up in the morning, I walk through the dining room and the living room and then through the office before going into the hallway and into the bathroom to pee. The other option is a lot shorter of walking through the dining room/kitchen and into the hallway to the bathroom. I think that the reason that I do this is because the movement of walking the extra distance is something that helps me to wake up after I've just gotten out of bed.
Please share your strange habits with me and why you think that you've picked up these odd habits.

When I was in college, the time that I went to bed varied with what time my first class was at in the morning because I had to get exactly seven and a half hours of sleep before I would get out of the bed. I think the reason for my habit was because of the fact that it worked out to exact sleep cycles. I functioned very well doing things that way though.

Being that I'm diagnosed as strongly Obsessive Compulsive, I have several little habits that I notice on a day-to-day basis.
One is that I am constantly cleaning under my nails. I hate having super-short nails, because I don't like how it feels when I press buttons or touch things, but having longer nails means that I am constantly scraping away whatever collects under my nails, to the point that I interrupt tasks and activities.
Another habit is that I touch things, say things, and arrange things in fours. This is a classic OCD symptom, so it may not count under your heading of 'habits', but I thought it might make for an interesting comment.
One more habit I have is that everything I own must be properly closed. Any and all drawers, cupboards, doors, shutters, bags, boxes, tupperware containers, etc. This may not be exactly a habit within my own home, but it becomes a problem when I'm in public, or at other people's houses, and I been closing things for them XD

Now, I've never been diagnosed as having OCD, but I do know that I have some tendencies that are OCD. One thing that people have always noticed about me is that I will always do things in multiples of fives. When I was in college my friends thought that it was very odd that when I was taking notes in class I always had to skip a line on my paper after I'd written five lines on my paper. I didn't understand why at the time either, but in taking some classes in psychology I learned that it was an OCD tendency because five is the number that I do almost everything in.

Hi, Jen. I'm also OCD and have a lot of the same things as you. I can't stand drawers or cabinets left open so I also am constantly closing things, plus straightening crooked things. As you say it's okay at home but it sometimes can be a problem at other peoples houses. My daughter is constantly telling me, It's okay, mom. This is not your house.

I thought you want to make sure that everything is okay in all those rooms.
When eating I have to have either a napkin or tissue near me cause I need to clean my right fingers almost every spoonful of food, even though I use spoon and fork to eat, I still feel my fingers are dirty and oily from the foods. So when it was a standing party, I had my hands full with plate, spoon or fork and napkin or tissue.

When I am at home, I don't always have a napkin close to me. But, now that you've mentioned it, I do wipe my fingers frequently when we are eating at a restaurant. I do think it is because of the fact that my fingers feel dirty.

You are definitely not alone in being a person that is slow to wake up in the morning. When I worked outside the house I was able to get up and go very quickly. But, having spent the last four and a half years as a stay at home mother, I am slow to wake up and get functional in the morning.

I have several strange habits or actions but as Jen, above, I'm OCD.
I like to have things in order, my order, so it probably dosen't matter to anyone else. When I stand in front of the mirror fixing my hair and I need to turn around and see the back of it I have to turn in the same direction each time. If I don't it just feels extremely uncomfortable to me. I then have to start all over and turn in the right direction. Same thing in the shower, if I turn to rinse my hair I have to do it in the certain way that feels right to me.
If I go through a revolving door or in an elevator I have to touch the wall My hand has to be on the wall the whole time or I feel very anxious. I think that has something to do with the OCD also, or it may just be a weird habit, I don't know.
I have to use more than one plate to eat because I can't let my food touch. Some things are okay to touch but mostly not. I need to use extra smaller plates to put the different foods on. I also have a real problem with seeing other people letting the food touch on their plates. I can usually control myself and not say anything but sometimes I just have to blurt out something like OH NO, DON'T LET THAT TOUCH!. It can be pretty embarrassing sometimes.
I smell of my food before I take a bite, too. I think that's just a habit. If it smells bad, I don't want to eat it. So I think that's just a habit that developed in childhood to keep from eating something nasty
It's hard to tell what might just be a weird habit or what is the OCD.

I would think that the thing with the smelling the food is probably rooted in something that happened to you when you were a child. Now with the food touching thing, I know a lot of people that are like that. In fact I've been to people's houses before that have the sectioned plates for every member of their family for this reason. To me it doesn't really matter that much, but there are certain things that I can't stand to have touching.

As a newbie, I'm so happy to finally post my first response to the topic that caught my eyes while I was browsing at today's top discussions :)
I always ask myself why I just can't live in this world without a mosquito net on my feet :) This thing really plays a big role in my life. It gives a calming feeling whenever I'm mad and it relaxes me whenever I'm stressed! I've had this habit ever since I was a kid, and now that I'm married, it's even more weird coz I married a man with the same strange habit too :) haha!
And here's the strangest of them all, my two-year-old baby girl is also finding great pleasure and a feeling of security whenever she places her little feet on our magic mosquito net :)

Now that one I will say is something that is a little bit strange. However, I am the kind of person that does tend to keep a blanket over my lap when I am working on the computer because even if I am not cold it is something that is comforting to me.
Welcome to mylot and enjoy the ride. I absolutely love it here.

The only strange habit I can think of is when I go to my usual grocery store there is an aisle I like to park in and I will not park in any other aisle. Even if it means a longer walk. Don't know why I do this.. I just do. Also when my husband drives I make him park in that aisle too.

Hmm, perhaps the reason for that is so that you won't have a hard time finding your car when you get done at the grocery store. I remember going shopping with a friend of mine and he'd forgotten that we'd driven my car and he was wondering around the parking lot looking for his car. It was pretty funny.

I always make myself clean at least once a day eg. taking bath, washing hands and etc. I like myself to be clean and smell good.

Now I don't think that there is anything at all strange about this habit. In fact, I think that making sure that you are clean is a very good habit to have.

wow as fast as it hits me to go, id have an accident. i can barely make it around the corner from my room. when i drove i always had to be smoking while driving, but no matter how cold it was i couldnt stand the smoke in that small area, so i left my window open a bit on the far side. everyone thought that was strange but it did turn out good one day when i locked the keys in the car. easier to get them out. im trying to think of something now i do but cant

For me, it's a couple of things. And both is with regards the TV.
I just don't go turning off the TV at night to go to sleep. I put the sleep timer on, so I don't get to see it turn off. Of course I also use the TV as an alarm, so when I wake up the TV is already on.
Also, I do the same when I leave a room. I don't like turning it off so I use the sleep timer too. Even when I leave the house, the TV would still be on. And will just turn off well after I'm gone.

I think habits, when they are strange like I like to keep curling my hair but just some of it is a form of fulfilling something empty in us. For example I begun it in a time I was feeling insecure, I didn't stop cause now feels really good, just like a hobby, a mania. When I am thinking in a very concentrated way I do it.

That might be something that makes sense. For a long time I didn't really have anything of my own and instead paid rent to live in my mother's basement. My husband and I have lived in our home for the past two years and we've now owned our home for three years. Perhaps it is my subconscious way of walking through the house and thinking about the fact that it is mine.
