How to keep ontop of student expenses?

I'm beginning my first year of college in the fall, and I don't have any financial support from my family. All of my money will be coming out of loans, and hopefully some scholarships and bursaries. My intended school has no residence or meal plan, so I'll be on my own for budgeting and spending - does anyone have any tips or rules for getting by on a student's dime?
