Is Public Crafting a Social Faux Pas?

Although jsut a teenager, I've been involved in many different crafts for years now. not only are they incredibly fun,. and occassionaly rather beautiful, but they can be a great way to spend those extra minutes and hours when you find yourself with nothing to do - well, nothing productive, anyway.
Recently I found myself in a position where I was spending over three hours each day on public transit, and I naturally thought about doing crafts on my trips. Over the months I spent on this ridiculous schedule, I took up transit knitting, crocheting, needle tatting, embroidery, and even mending.
I tried very hard not to bother anyone with it, but still managed to receive many strange looks, and even a few laughs. None of this a particularly bothered me, but I started wondering if I was bothering others.
So I thought I'd ask, do you think crafting in public is a social faux pas?

Don't pay attention to them. They're the ones who are socially inept when they can't accept that some people do things they don't do. Crafting, especially for a teenager, is unusual but not so much so that anyone should comment or even react to it. They laughed? That's rude and immature, so just consider the source and craft away!

i dont know why it would be. i take stuff with me to do in public. i remember working on a cross stitch project while i was waiting in the emergency room getting an iv for an infection and yes, people commented on it but really, who cares what others think?

I don't think it is. Knitting and crocheting shouldn't bother anyone. I would be more bothered by someone talking on their phone, or turning their music up too loud on their ipod.

I think just ignore them. there's nothing offensive about what you're doing.
the thing is, people seem to like being disapproving on public transport.
I get dirty looks and tuts from some stupid old woman when I do my make up on the way to work on the train. why she finds that offensive, I can't think.
I think you're using your time productively
