Souvenirs you have got when traveling

I like to get some souvenirs when I go off traveling to different countries. When I was in Indonesia at age 21 years old I bought two costume dolls and a model house. Since then I have collected many more costume dolls from different countries and a few more model houses. I like to collect crystals and have many of these. I got one of them in Romania. When I traveled to Cape Town I got a train to Simon's Town and found a place called Scratch Patch. There I bought a bag and could fill it with as many crystals as I liked. Where I live crystal tumble stones can be more than one pound each. In the town of Sidney on Vancouver Island, Canada, I found another place called Scratch Patch. It was also enjoyable to go to. Have you got some souvenirs when traveling to a different country? What sort of souvenirs do you like to get? Have you bought a souvenir from anywhere especially memorable?

I used to love collecting postcards and keyrings but, then I just started to have this huge collection that I had nothing to do with and was just taking up room so now instead I just make sure I get a picture of myself in front of a famous landmark from where ever I have travelled to and then it goes in my travel frame! Sometimes I may still get the odd souvenir such as a little wooden elephant I got in Thailand which is literally fits in the palm of my hand so hardly takes up any room! Lol

Hi Frankie. I like the sound of your Thai elephant. I can see that you are keen not to get much clutter in your home. Taking a photo of a landmark is sensible and great to remember the place by. I put my postcards in three different albums. I had some shelves put in my bedroom to show my collection of porcelain dolls. My costume dolls don't take up much space in my lounge.

Dear maximax8, Wow, you bought wonderful souvenirs, crystal is really worth it! When I started to travel, I do buy all kind of souvenirs like fridge magnet, key chains to give to relatives and friends. As times goes by, I learn to buy less and the luggage will be less too. I bought pearl pendant when I am in China, amethyst when I am in Korea (pendant) and Thailand (ear rings) - managed to get the same design, looks like from the same design set.. I remembered a college girl also start to collect dolls when we are in Eastern Europe trip. I believe your collections will fetch good price in the future, they are collectibles. I started to collect 'Monopoly' sets from different part of the world like Germany, Singapore, Prague as each set has its unique features. Happy traveling to you and family ..

Dear Iriene, It is interesting to find out that when you began traveling you used to buy fridge magnets and key chains. I know what you mean about the low luggage allowance that we get these days. It is wonderful that your pearl necklace looks like it is the same design as your amethyst pendant and your earrings. I liked reading about the college girl that collected dolls. It is wonderful that you have collected Monopoly sets from different parts of the world. Happy traveling and wishing you lots more happy collecting.

Hi Cher. I so wanted to visit Prince Edward Island and planned to in 2010. However my flight to Halifax got canceled and so I booked a flight to Vancouver to make up for this happening to me. It is lovely that you have still got your little sterling silver lobster net.

Hi Maxine, Iused to buy souvenirs for everyone, but now I bring just a little something for me and sometimes for the grandchildren. I choose thm light, small and hopefully useful. I had my doll collection but I gave it away to my eldest daughter a couple of Christmas ago. She said she was going to repair them. Now I bring small knicknacks, T shirts and this time I also bouth a small Arubian flag as I was there for Flag day and watched an awesome parade.

Hi Marguicha. It is lovely that your elder daughter now has your doll collection. Getting a flag in Aruba was a superb idea as you saw a parade with many flags. There is a coastal town near where I live that has flags all along its sea front. Nowadays you are just getting small souvenirs that don't take up too much room in your luggage. Hug.

I actually collect fridge magnets from my trips, so I always get those. I have around 50 of them by now! That is the only thing I get, I find it easier to find something to collect, that way you always know what to buy and you get a nice collection in the end. Other than that, I don't really buy so many souvenirs.

Wow it is amazing to hear that you have around 50 fridge magnets that you have collected on your travels. I have some fridge magnets and should really put them back on my fridge after moving last year. My sister collects fridge magnets and I will have to ask how many she has got now.

I like getting souvenirs as well. I always get a few different things from each country. 1. Postcards- I have a postcard from every country I have visited and have them all in a photo album. I love to flip through it and remember all the good memories. 2. Coins- I also collect coins and get a unique coin from every country I visit. 3. A unique/cultural souvenir- I always get a souvenir that reminds me of the country. Something that resembles the culture so I remember what each country was like. My favorite would be my jade necklace from new zealand because these necklaces are worn by everyone and handcrafted there.

Your jade necklace sounds really beautiful. I also have a collection of postcards. Though when I was in Tallinn I was shocked at the price of a postcard. It is lovely that you have put all your postcards in a photo album. I have got a number of foreign coins and some notes. I like my three dollar note and my triangular coin from the Cook Islands most of all.

Hi maximax8, I like buying souvenirs whenever I pay a visit to any places which I haven't come before. I usually purchase signature souvenirs of the particular places so that whenever seeing the souvenirs on the shelves I enjoy recalling the sweet moment having fun there. Most of them are well designed key holders with their fascinating landmarks respectively Besides I love to keep some some coins or small value paper notes of the countries I had visited as remembrance. There are attractive signature designs shown on both sides of the coins as well as paper notes. To me, all of them are valuable and memorable Happy posting

Heh funny you bring this up. I just got back from the Caribbean and had to get the hats from countries that I had been to before but forgot to get my hats. My wife has a much more manageable collecting interest of buying magnets. When we were in Europe we were in the same town name as the town back home (sister cities). I wanted to send a postcard from there to where I live. Corny, yeah but hey it's something to remember a trip by and that is the most important thing, no? * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sister_cities Great post! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sister_cities

Miniture Effell Tower in France. Also a blown glass double globe where you heat it up with your hands and the liquid inside goes up to the top to defy gravity. Sweatshirt saying "Alaska" when we went there. Earned a t-shirt for exercising almost every day at least once and a couple of times twice a day that said, "Ship Shape" on the Alaskan Cruise. That was free, you just had to have the instructor initial your card every day. A mug from Bar Harbor Maine with a lobster on it and the name of the place. We ate our way through Maine. It rained every day we were there. We were in a small camper on the back of a truck. Bet I gained 10 lbs that week. We had seafood 3 times a day. Loved it!

We travel a lot so buying something that might break isn't tempting at all. We usually buy magnets that reflect the place we've been. Our whole freezer door is covered with magnets from sea to shining sea. We also collect postcards and plan to put them all together after we are done traveling.

The first few years when I got a job which enabled me to travel around, I got fascinated with masks. So, I picked up a maske in different countries in Asia. The scarier, the better. But it took a bit to put them in frames, and make them visually appealing on a wall. Nowadays, I'm just content with getting fridge magnets from the places that I visit. There is quite a few of them now on my fridge.

I'm fond of traveling and the souvenir that I always get/buy is a ref magnet. I like looking at my fridge with all the magnets that i got from different parts of the country or even outside the country. I of course try to get the unique looking ones. FOr me, it is the best souvenir, affordable and no excess baggage.. :)
