I read a crime story. Following the murder, the killer went to the most crowded train station in the country, counting on no one noticing anything amiss with his clothes, his hair, or even his behavior.
Then, the author wrote: There was anonymity in numbers, people said.
What means? i could not understand this sentence--there was anonymty in numbers. could you help me?

It means that he cannot be recognized among the crowd. He just blended in with the crowd, and he could no longer be pinpointed out. Anonimity is being not recognized, or not seen, and numbers pertains to a number of people, or many people.
I hope that helps, and not makes it all the more confusing.

That sentence just means that, because is at a crowded place, with a high NUMBER of people, there is less of a chance that he will be noticed. The more people that you are surrounded by, the less likely that someone will remember seeing you.
Like, if it was just the killer and 4 other people, chances are someone would remember seeing him, and probably be able to describe him in great detail.
But it sounds to me like the killer is surrounded by hundreds, maybe even thousands of people...so the chances of someone being able to recall seeing him is very small.
Did I explain it well?

That is a literary way of building up the excitement. The author put us in the mind of the killer, so we know how he thinks. By describing the clothes, that means that everything is well planned. The killer is just like every Tom, Di-ck and Harry. And then the author affirmed this line of thought by saying There was anonymity in numbers, which simply means the killer will not be recognized.
Happy reading!

hello yangcg!
that explains a lot to me. they have spoken and they have provided the answers as well. there was anonymity in numbers which quite means you can't count when you can't figure which too count, or who's who, or which is which...
for sure, killers will really be like that. they will join a crowd and do some changes with their appearances for them not to be known. just like in movies. they will stay anonymous.
