Older drivers should be tested a bit more often. It is for the safety of themselves, not to mention the safety of others. They might be able to be on the road a lot of the time however, if they are still alert enough. After all, it really depends on the person whether or not they are going to be able to be on the road past a certain age. There should be measures to make sure if they should or should not.
Then again, one might argue that this should really apply to many. Given the number of accidents on the road, younger people might be just as bad sometimes. Granted, you should really not be on the road if you are not alert and competent enough, but should this really extend to any age. I believe that it really should. It is a very tricky thing to nail down, exactly when there should be restrictions because one person might start failing in their late fifties, while others might be able to go into their seventies and eighties and be as sharp and alert on the road as any twenty year old.

Car Insurance where I live is weighted more heavily against Young,Inexperienced drivers, and against Males more than Females..Older or elderly drivers are stereotyped as being too slow and careful, ending up with a tailback of other cars behind them..I posted a couple of discussions here about a Restaurant in the village where I live that's on a bend that needs to be taken at a reduced speed, with speed restrictions posted through the village..and Yet,the building has been driven into twice in the past 2 Years, and other road features and walls have been hit at various times in the past, too! Both hits were by younger adults,btw..

hey there. From what i`ve heard elder people need 70% more light to see in the darkness as younger people do. So there is one problem. The other is coordination like in the case you presented.
but ethically speaking there is nothing we can do because it wouldn`t be fair to them to suspend their licenses at a certain age. The only reasonable thing is increasing the tests in order to keep their license by they go older.
Sadly, elder people are really far as a menace from drunk drivers, idiots, show-offs,and people who generally can`t understand the danger of 3 cars speeding with 100 miles/hour side by side

A friend of mine just lost her son's father due to an accident with an elderly woman. I'm not sure if the accident was caused by lack of eye sight or coordination.. but I do know the woman was older. It's very sad and the accident could have been avoided.

yes i think they should have to do a retest because your vision tends to get bad. as you get older so maybe thats why she crashed into a building

Their should be more tests of the elderley to make sure the elderley are safe to drive. In the town where i live an elderley man had a heart attack whilst driving this caused him to lose control of his vehicle and run someone over fatally injuring them. However to feel sorry for the elderley who lose their licence but have no other means of transport however the safety of others should come first.

I really believe though seeing that everyone have a right to the road, that reaching a certain age, say about 60. Everytime you are about to renew your license you need to take over back the driving test. You see atleast then those old people lacking some abilities will be remove from the road and so not to cause any damage. The driving test for them shouldnt be hard to pass, seeing that they have been driving for couple of years, actually lots of years and should have loads of experience. So if they should fail that driving test. It would simply means that their times of driving should now come to an end. Atleast then we will know that the roads will be safer. And the probability of having an accident would be lesser.

Yes I agree to a point. I think additional testing should be done on these older drivers such as their eye site & coordination & things like that. But on the other hand I feel bad because this is the only way that have to get around. Some don't have children of their own to take care of them & the ones that do have children who can't be bothered to take care of them. So this leaves the Elderly people to fend for themselves. Sad that the ones that do have children can't even rely on them when they need them the most. Those ones should be ashamed of themselves!!
