Are You A Vegetarian?

November 19, 2006 11:21am CST
Are you a vegetarian? If yes - why? If not - again why? I'm a veggie myself, mainly because I don't like the idea of eating animals - and the taste now would make me choke! I also believe that it is healthier to be on a vegetarian diet/ Eating too much meat makes you aggresive ... well that's my theory. So do you eat meat?

We are meant to eat meat otherwise we wouldn't be able to. While I don't have a problem with people who choose not to, I wish you would realise that.

No, that's just a myth! We are not meant to be meat eaters. You can live perfectly healthily without eating animals.

So who told you that you 'have' to have meat? I'm very healthy without it. God made lots of things and animals but we don't eat them all!

I can't put plants on the same level as animals I'm afraid. There is quite a difference, but each to their own!

I'm not a vegetarian. I can understand many of the reasons for being so though. My reason for not being one is that, as human beings, we are omnivorous and therefore designed to eat both meat and vegetation. I enjoy both meat and vegetables. The thing with being healthier is that, in order to get everything you need without meat, you need to have more of it. For example, you can get plenty of iron from one slice of red meat but you would have to have a plateful of broccolli to get the same amount. A friend of mine was a vegan and said that it was very expesive to be a healthy vegan. Now, he does eat meat but doesn't really like it anyway! I don't believe that eating too much meat can make you aggressive but maybe eating more meat than anything else could do because, although we do need all the nutrients present in meat, we don't need a lot of it.

There is no reason why humans can't eat most meat actually. As far as I know, most animals meats aren't poisonous to us, it's just whichever society we come from which kind of dictates which meats are ok and which are not. There are nutrients in other things but of all the vegetarians I know, either they are eating almost all of the time, or they take a lot of supplements. Now, I don't know if you will understand this but surely if they need to do that then it proves that we really should eat meat.

Thanks for your opinion and time taken. I can't agree with you, of course! Sure meat has nutrients but so do a lot of other things. And how come that humans only eat certain animals? Why not gobble them all up?

I am not a vegetarian.I saw lots of not that healthy people who is a vegetarian so I don't know if just all vegetarians are healthier than people who eats meat. I don't really eat lots of meat either though.I prefer fish more than meat and also loves soy beans.I can't eat much red meat such as beef etc. I don't eat much meat doesn't mean I am avoiding or think meat eater isn't good for their health or so,everything is moderation.Moderation in all things :)

You say you have seen vegetarian people who don't look healthy. Well I have seen loads of meat eaters who also look far from healthy! There's bound to be some of both in each category. Moderation in all things is a good motto (unfortunately!). Thanks for the comment.

I am too. I do it, because its healthy, and I could never eat an animal. ugh. just thinking about it makes me want to hurl. Animals are our friends, not our food. I used to eat meat, when I was young and ignorant, and never did really enjoy the taste.

A like mind. That's how I feel. I just don't like the idea of eating any creature that has lived.

I have faith in vaishnava ideals. That is my primary reason of being vegeterian. The Vaishnava philosophy teaches that we should not even kill plants unnecessarily. In the Bhagavad-gita (9.26) Krishna (God) says: "If someone offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or a little water, I will accept it." We offer Krishna only the kind of food He demands, and then we eat the remnants. If offering vegetarian food to Krishna were sinful, then it would be Krishna's sin, not ours. But God is apapa-viddha-sinful reactions are not applicable to Him. Eating food first offered to the Lord is also something like a soldier's killing during wartime.

Thank you for that lovely and full comment. I've always had a natural instict that we should respect all forms of life. If we all did this perhaps the world would be at peace.

Chicken and fish are supposedly better for you than red meat. Why not go one step further and cut out meat all together?

I used to eat steaks but I've now seen the light!! My wife still eats meat. I tell her it's why she's so aggresive - in a joking way, of course.

I am not but have been trying to, but because I had that urge in HK, I was not able to start it. Vegetarian food in HK is outrageously expensive compared to the local chinese dishes. Vege Restaurants command high prices because they know they have capture market for the many Buddhists in HK. I love vegetarian food. It makes me feel light compared to eating a lot of meat and fish.
7 Dec 06
It's a shame to hear about the high prices. Here in the UK vegetarian food is in most restaurants and pubs - though sometimes they have funny ideas about what vegetarians like to eat! I musr say that I'd never go back to meat eating now.
