I started this discussion to make everyone aware of advantages of hibernation.
Hibernation is a state in which the contents of RAM (session) is saved on hard drive and computer is turned off. Hibernation doesn't consume any power and is good for energy saving and environment.
If you want to know more about hibernation and its advantages then you may refer to Wikipedia article on it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibernation_(computing)
PS: Don't get confused between hibernation and sleep mode. They are two different states. Sleep mode do consume power while hibernation doesn't.
I advice everyone to use hibernation as it is more environment friendly than shut down and sleep mode.

It has a disadvantages also. First of all it needs a lot of space to save current configuration state ... and 2nd is if u continue to do hibernation every time .. after some restarts your PC gets stuck and needs to be re-installed.
I personally tested it ... and do not Recommend HIBERNATION.
The best option is do a registry trick and make your PC to start and shutdown faster by removing the unwanted programs and application that comes up with as soon as the windows starts.

A lot of space is not required when hibernating. Just around the size of you RAM is required as the contents of RAM are stored to the hard drive.
If you are having a new OS then you should not have problems of PC getting stuck. Some programs do create problems.
Anyway thanks for responding!

That is quite a great set of info. I 100% agree with this. Also note that Hibernate always goes for an intesive read write on Hard disk and that can damage it if it has gotten older.
The reg. trick is quite safe and gets things done better. If you are unaware of the Reg. Trick or it doesnt allow you (some rules of the organization or network), then you can always try using - removing the applications in the start up. They too help in speeding up the Boot - though not that effectively.

Yes, there are compatibility issues with hardware and software but if it is working then we should use it.
I read a discussion where everyone was against hibernation and they were all mixing it with sleep mode so I thought of starting a discussion to encourage its use for at least those who have compatible hardware and software.

Indeed but we can't always use hibernation as a replacement to shut down when its like we need the computer to be shut for 3 hours or so. Sleep can be always replaced by hibernation. The state can be recovered quickly enough and doesn't result in internet connectivity errors too. I have started to make use of this option in my laptop recently after my new laptop was bought 3 months ago. The Windows & operating system does well with these options and i when I tried it out with Ubuntu 10.10 there weren't much troubles too.
It is an environment friendly option than sleep mode for sure, I would say.

Hibernation can replace shut down for normal usage and it can be done for even several days(not just 3 hours) without any impact. However sometimes we need to shut down and restart our laptop when we have to make effect of any registry change usually after software installation or if our system is working slow.
Hibernation cannot always replace sleep as system can be revoked from sleep just instantly but revoking from hibernation does take a little time.
Sleep is especially useful if we will not be using our system for short interval of time, say 15 minutes.
Sleep have its own advantages as the session reside in RAM when system is in sleep mode.

I like to hibernate, and now when I learned that is good for saving and environment, I like it even more. The main purpose why I hibernate is that makes my PC ready to work in much faster time than when I put it off and then put it on again. You see, I am not at all good in putting my software in order, so it takes ages until my pc boots up. To put it on hibernate is so much easier.

Hibernation is good if you have enough RAM and a huge Hard Disk space. It's not recommended for slow computers or if you have limited resources on your PC.
