How do I figure out which laptop to purchase. I am in second year of University and think I am due for a new laptop. Mine is running very slow and is driving me insane. Also, Macbook or pc?

I agree with he first user- mac-books will not yield you the same machine as another PC at equal price.
I'd personally build my own laptop- or you can buy a custom built one- because you will generally get more for less money doing it that way.

People are all just hyped up on macbooks because of the brand name, myths about them, etc... (in some ways like coke and pepsi...)

How old is your old one. Maybe you don't need a new one. Maybe your old one needs space.

Right now it is 2 years old. It is still in decent shape, and i think i could get a decent amount of money selling it used on ebay once I wipe the hardrive. I got the hard drive replaced last year, and for the first month it worked great, but after that it is taking forever to boot up. Also it sometimes goes to sleep when I tell it and sometimes it does not. I think now is the best time to sell it, cause I would get the most money for it now and put it towards the new mac. The new models look very good and will last a long time. A lot longer than this pc would ever last me.

i am using a toshiba satellite laptop l665d, and it's the best, the battery last longs enough, and it is fast, affordable and easy to use. and it's a perfect laptop for students, and professionals. :))

I have been using a Toshiba satellite laptop for some time now. Very happy with it, light weight, convenient to carry along too. Not that I am recommending that for you to buy, just for information. Prices do vary a lot with different brands.

well it usually depends on performance=price but don't look at macs because they are overpriced cheap machines.
I have bought msi 400fx because its much cheaper but better specs than what i have seen around.
