This past year my youngest daughter had to get glasses. She is the first of us so far that has had to have them so I am learning everything right along with her. I always have a ton of questions for the eye doctor and a ton of concerns. I got her a really nice pair of glasses but I think someone might have said something to her at school to hurt her feelings because she decided suddenly that she wanted contacts...so..her next appointment, we requested them. We went to a class for her where she learned how to take care of them and put them in and take them out. It took her forever to get them out! My eyes were watering just watching her try. She is getting used to them now but it will take some time. So...would you rather have glasses or contacts? Do you have any helpful tips for a new contact user? What is the one thing that you would share about eyecare if you could?

I prefer contacts because they are much more convient for me. I haven't had to wear glasses or contacts for a long time, but if I had to now it would be easier for me to have contacts because I have two young daughters who would probably see the glasses as toys lol. My suggestion if your daughter gets contacts is to make sure she keeps them clean. Also tell her that it is important that she remembers to take them out every night. I slept in mine once and almost had to go to the ER to get them taken out because it was sticking to my eyelid. I had to rub water in my eye to loosen it up and I was finally able to get it out. I wish her the best of luck.

I always wanted contacts, but because I had a very bad eye infection as a kid, my eyes just can't handle it. It's a shame though, 'cause I hate wearing glasses, I've worn them since I'm 8 years old, and I'm 30 now. After 22 years, I still don't like them.
Have a great day

I got the infection before I had to wear glasses, it's due to the infection that my eyesight got bad. Of course, with contacts you always need to be very careful, you'll need to make sure she follows the directions properly, but as long as she does, I'm sure she'll be okay.
Have a great day

I am sure that they probably teased her about being four eyes I was just had to ignore them for back then they didnt have contact s.
Tell her that she now can see better than they can for the glasses help her do this also grown ups can make stupid comments that make ya not what to wear the glasses.
also make sure you brag on her an how nice she loks in them

I have never experienced glasses or contacts. I do use reading glasses but that is all so far. None of my kids have needed them yet either. I think if I was a young girl I would want contacts too. I remember a good friend of mine- I saw her wear glasses one time soon after she got them. She took them off and never put them back on and I have never seen her wear contacts or glasses since.

Hi Jen,
Relax. Eye sight problem is very common these days. I started putting glass when I was in second year of my BA and since then I am always with them.
Glasses have some advantages that contacts do not. First thing your daughter has to be very careful with her contacts and keep in mind that she never forgets to put them in the specific water. Crying with the contacts on is risky in the sense that it they could get out and she never knows.
Contacts have positive tings like glasses have. S=Ask her which feels at home in. After all it is her eyes.

I started using eyeglasses four years ago. And I stopped wearing it when my eyes got clear visions for some time. But after a year or so, it went blurred again and the grade went up one stage. At first, I was a bit uncomfortable because of the way I look and the way those glasses affect some of the things I'm doing. I want to wear contacts before but I decided not to because it needs some care and maintenance. You need to remove it and clean it together with your eyes for some time of the day. At night, you have to do it again. When wearing eyeglasses, you just have to remove it like usual, hassle-free, that's the advantage of eyeglasses.

Hi Jen. I don't wear contacts or glasses, but if I did I think I'd wear glasses!
My sister got contacts when we were kids. She was about 12 at the time. Just watching her put them in or take them out gave me the willies. Those darn things freaked me out! LOL
Anyway, one thing you and your daughter need to remember is to make sure she takes them out before she goes to sleep. It's not a good idea to keep contacts in all night (unless they are made to do that ) as they could roll back in the eye. My sister knew of someone that had that happen to them. I'm not sure what happened, but I think it had to be surgically removed. Don't quote me on that though. It was over 25 years ago, after all!
Oh yeah, one more thing. Contacts are a lot easier to lose than glasses. So, make sure your daughter minds where she puts them.
Good luck!

I wear glasses but would much rather wear contacts. I did for awhile and loved them, but with being both near and far sighted, there were none that worked for me. I do think that there are those who are naturals at taking them in and out, and others who always have difficulty. It DOES get easier with time. I can tell her to always carry the cases AND her glasses with her. Not long after I got mine, I was working outside at the county fair near here. It was windy, I had a long line of people buying tickets and couldn't leave where I was, and one of them blew off center on my eye. I stood there for a good 20 min with that eye closed while i took care of the customers and the line went down. BUT I didn't have my glasses with me so couldn't take them out..........probably not the case for them either. Luckily I was able to move it beneath my eyelid and get it in place, and it didn't move again. Keeping her hands clean when she works with them.........but I am sure she knows that. i will repeat that it does get easier!

HI JEN. children can be so cruel to others. I have worn glasses about all my life but have never had contacts. I never thought i'd be able to put them in & take them out, lol. I hope she does well w/hers & i know she is thrilled to not have to wear glasses. They can cramp your style when u are young. I'm just thankful i have mine & i can still see, not very well but am so thankful for what sight i do have. I hate to see people be so vain about wearing them. I'm talking old people like me, lol.

I don't think I would be able to wear them either...the poor little thing struggled with them for a while before she got the hang of it...I even had tears pouring out of my eyes just watching. They said she would have a side vision with the contacts that glasses didn't offer...I thought that was neat. I have learned alot about vison stuff...this is my first round with it. There were alot of people in my family when I was little that wore glasses...but I have never had experience. It is all new to me and I just hope I am doing everything I can for her. Thanks for the response Jo!

I got my sons contact lenses about a year ago. They had the hardest time getting them in and out at first. I have contacts and I love them. I tell my boys to make sure they clean their eyes out really well before putting them in. Then, I put the contact on the tip of my finger and place some solution in them. I then quickly put it in my eye. Some solution drips down my face, but I don't care. It really helps them feel hydrated. I hope she figures it out quickly.

Well, usually it is not advisable for young girls to have contact lenses, but if she does, then she have to be more clean and hygiene when putting those lenses, made sure her fingers are not tainted with cosmetics and do not sleep with those lenses, made sure they are soaked with correct lens cleaner to prevent protein buildup.Do not wear more than 8 hours per day.

Thanks for the advice. Those are all things that I worry about. The doctor told me that all solutions are not the same...I guess I will be buying all of it from there..I'm not sure what brand I would buy if it were over the counter...any suggestions? I want her to have the proper cleaning supplies but it would be nice if I didn't have to pay the price the doctor's office charge..they are the most expensive place in town but they are the state of the art as far as testing equipment and such.

They've probably already said this- but start off by building up a 'resistance' to them, by increasing the amount of time she wears them each day: ex/ 4 hours first day, 6 hours second day, 8 hours etc...
I never really did have much of a problem taking them out- but putting them in was a whole other story. I find they feel best when I put them in, and hold the contact in place with one finger and move my eye around- to have them fit best.
When I take 'em out I just use my thumb and pointer finger, squeezing at the edge and having it pop off.
When they don't feel 'right' or comfortable, sometimes I will squeeze my eyelids on the edges(in the same way I do my contacts when removing them) to get the contacts to line up nicely- instead of having to take them out and reposition them/ this usually works nicely.
I find putting them in without a mirror can be easier as well. Everyone has different experiences though...

I've never had an eye infection from my contacts before- and, I don't even rinse them off with solution before putting them in/or wash my hands before putting them in...: plus, I only change the contact solution in my cases once a month(or top them off when they get low). Had them fall out on a dirty floor- put 'em back in after blowing off any dirt and what-not...
I've fallen asleep with them in too- no problems caused by that other then my eyes being extremely dry, and the contact went off to the side of my eye and I had to dig it out(but, that even happens randomly during the day, at least 3 times a year or so[can be annoying if you are out in public because you get all these strange looks when you go digging in your eyes :D])
I wouldn't really worry about her getting an eye infection from them- as long as she doesn't drop her contacts in a pile of dog feces or what-not, she should be just fine...

ouchy..contacts are manmade torture devices.they make my eyes as red as a demons.
anyhow..lemme think..um one word of advice for contacts is to keep them clean
they can hurt your eyesight if you dont.
oh oh! and always keep them wet they will feel like knives in your eyes if you
let them get dry

Well, I also have my eyeglasses and contacts. I don't like using eyeglasses so i bought a pair of contact lens. It looks nice but the disadvantage is that after 5 hours my eyes started feeling sore and I feel a lot of discomfort. My advice is that she can wear the contacts but not too often. I also advice that she must clean the lens properly to clean and prevent bacteria.

i am sure someone said something regarding her eye glasses at school that is why she wanted to get a contact. some kids are really nasty and bully. my wife wears eye glasses but she has contacts too. when she is busy doing her crafts and sewing she wears contacts. it is very hot here in our country that her face becomes oily all the time. she always have this bottles of solution so the contacts are always clean. it will cause eye infections if she will not clean her contacts before and after using. she needs to bring a small bottle of solution too in case she needs to clean her contacts at school. dust or small debris can get in the eyes. dont let her sleep with the contacts on. and if she is at home and not going out she might as well use the glasses so her eyes can rest from using contacts. i dont know if this are helpful tips but that is only my observation on what my wife do with her contacts.

I think that is a good idea about wearing her glasses ar home...I also thank you for the suggestion of the cleaning solution for school. I hadn't thought of that but I can see where it would come in handy if she were in a dusty or dry situation. I guess you can never be too prepared. Thanks!

Best advice would be to be very careful and wash her hand before first applying them. Most infections that I have heard about were because many not washing their hands and causing bacteria to go on the contact lens before placing them in the eyes. Also that I can think of is if she feels discomfort to not force it and allow her eyes to rest for a day or two. Initially it will be uncomfortable to have the foreign object in her eyes for a week or two. So she has to follow the doctors directions by not overusing them initially. If I can remember it was like 1 hour the first and second day and gradually increasing an hour each day there after. Because she will be in school for now, it may be wise to only use them during the weekends until she gets use to them.
Contact lenses, wow she is growing up, Jen.

I know! She is the baby too!
I initially was against the whole idea but I've warmed up to it after learning a bit more about them. She had the monthly pairs. She is doing really good about the cleanliness thing. I was worried the most about that..she is still young.
Thanks for responding!

I have been using contact lenses since 2006; however, I also have eye glasses that I used when I'm just at home to rest my eyes. Just make sure to wash hands before putting the contact lenses in as dirty hands may put unnecessary dirt in the eyes that can cause infection. Also have a lubricant eye drop solution in tow whenever it feels eyes are dry.

Thanks for the advice! She has glasses too so that when she is at home, I like for her to take them out. She really likes them alot better than I thought she would. When I saw the trouble she was having getting them in and out in the beginning, I thought, this won't last. She's very good at it now though.
Welcome to myLot!
