how well does media affect the decision making of the crowd?

how well do you know the effect of media on the decision making of most of the people. I mean, television, radio, cellphone, commercial ads, billboards, even newspapers.. how well does this medium affect our way on deciding what things to do, buy and eat... does this affect our freedom to choose whatever we like?
