Good morning/afternoon/night MyLotters!
As a student myself, I am trying hard to get good grades because of the high cost of education in our university. Currently though, I have no problems with my grades. They were good enough for me. But something struck me just this very moment.
This feeling triggered when I was checking Facebook and I saw some of my friends posting some pictures of them having a group study. For me, group study don't really work for me. Even sometimes in class. There are times that only I have to be the one in charge of everything. So basically it's the same, an individual work.
I would like to ask though, if you're in a group, what are the things you would likely contribute or how do you make a group study work efficiently?

Individual and Group Studies have advantages and disadvantages. It's up to how you work out with yourself and other people. Most of the time group study has a better product/output.
If you are in-charge in the group do not solely carry the responsibilities you can pass on to other shoulders.Give each member individual tasks, have a time to check together each output. Again filter the data with the members and lastly brainstorm on how to pile all in one the collected data. Arguments , misunderstanding and disorientation may exist but handling it well and turning it to positive outlook will make thing change well.

Thank you for the advice but most of it could not work for me. I did gave them their assigned task and most of the times in the end, I will have to help them and do all the job. I have to come up ideas because they think theirs are not good and all. But there are times too that they will contribute a well done assignment.

I would like to study alone because when I am with others, I can't focus on study. It will waste our time. So when I have to study, I will lie on the bed alone and if I meet any difficulties about my lessons, I will call my friends to solve it. But I don't like being around with them.
I love China

I guess we're the same youless! I really have the tendency to just stay in bed and read, review, write, do my homework and all. Sometimes I would chat with my friends while studying asking them what to study or how to do this and that. It is just one of my pleasures whenever I study. I feel more comfortable with it. Thanks for commenting!

I personally dont like group study cause there are so many ideas and you are not sure anymore which one is right. Though there are important things discussed in a group study, its not very helpful for me cause the more I know something, the more I get confused so its better for me to get the benchmark information.

Usually, when we have brainstorming, we had a lot of things in mind and we also do not know which is the right one. In the end, we usually come up with an answer that is mixed, and our grades are also mixed up. Haha. It is really hard for me to appreciate a study group. Like you, I get very confused especially the brainstorming of ideas!

I remember when I was still in high school someone attempted to organize the group study at her home but unfortunately it wasn't organized properly for some reason that is why it did not happened. Though I was willing to try that group study but then I wasn't able to experience that. I am also glad that I can also study on my own but sometimes I can't concentrate that I need focus on what I am reading.

Good that you can study on your own because we can't always be dependent on others. Our parents taught us to be indepedent so let us be able to study indepedently

Group study really helps us a lot i never study early i will study just before 2days of the exam but ill do good in my exams its because of group studies only. a lots of benefits are there in group first thing is you can explain all what ever you know and can share others points this gives a lot of matter about that topic.these discusions are enough to write an exam.

Yes, group study really helped me a lot too. It really helps to have a group when you're in doubts because they are able to answer your questions. But if when I am studying for a certain subject that I can handle, more likely I could study my own. Thanks.

I am in a university too. My grade is good. My advice for you is to make yourself happy first then study later. Happiness makes your brain more efficient and that will make your studying easy. I study with a group. It is fun and happy to study with your friends. We study in a table but read individually. After memorizing, familiarizing and studying by self. We ask each other some questions so that interactions and fun while studying is present in us. The result is very good. Our group is always the highest in the class. I will add eating with your friends while studying is fun too.
Smile.

I see you were able to appreciate group studying! Keep it up. Well, in my case, when we have group study, it's like we study individually but we form a group, but most of the times, we get easily distracted on things. But whenever we will ask questions, we will ask those who are good at it. For example, they will ask me Math questions, I will ask this certain friend of mine about Fil and etc. Thanks for the advice!

when i study with my friends mostly every exams, we dont focus on books. we focus on our notes, because it's easier for us to study our notes that are direct to the point than those thick books. that's why even the most simple period on the whiteboard we still copy that. and when studying, we dont fully study, we also laugh and have fun... less seriousness means more learning for us. :)

Hello tammy, finally, somebody who appreciates group study! Well, certainly it may work on others. It also depends where we focus on, books or notes. Some teachers like to give loads of notes and in return, questions came from the notes. However, some of my professors here do not rely on anything, no notes, just talk. So we have no choice but to listen well and study the book. Thanks for the advice though, I learned something. Less seriousness, more fun. :)

I'm at the last year of architecture university where I do some works in group. To work in group is difficult. I stayed in group with a lot of people coming from different countries and with different approaches. To make a group work efficiently is very hard. I had a lot of troubles in the last architectural workshop I've done some days ago with people of Estern Europe countries. The best way to make the work going on is to explain well his own thought and to accept some compromises. Of course everyone have to act in this way. The success will not be sure, but it create an habit of cooperation that helps in working good.

I agree that individual study is effective. But it depends on your motivation to study. For me, group study is only good for consultation and tutoring sessions with your math geek classmate.haha

Hello. I have just graduated from college and I could say that there are always pros and cons in a group study. But in order for it to become effective, all the members of the group must set a goal and they must do all means to achieve that goal. Say for example, within 2 hours, they must be able to discuss the cardiovascular system; thus, they should concentrate on that topic alone and avoid discussing any topic which is not related. Furthermore, let each member share what they have learned because learning is a two-way process. You learn from each other and I believe that the mind works better when brainstorming occurs. I have proven that group study/brainstorming is effective because I get higher scores when it is done prior to an exam.

True, I just realized that there are a lot of brainstorming in a group, but the case is, whenever we are in a group, my groupmates would tell me, "Ikaw na bahala." (It's up to you). So, most of the times, I would do the job. So, that is an example of cons in a group study. It's like an individual work.

I think it depends on what type of person you are. (I categorize myself as independent and arrogant, as I don't get distracted easily. LOL) For me, however, if I'm studying something for the first time, I would be able to concentrate more when I'm studying alone. Group studying usually functions as a way of revision for me. I think it really helps when I already know the material I'm studying, and to be able to lead others back to the material thats being discussed. But I also think it depends on WHO you are studying with. With the right friends, group studying can really be an effective study method. The people you study with should also have as much focus as you. My highschool teacher used to pair us all up in groups of three, and I found it effective only during afternoons, when my attention span equals that of a child. (haha)

I have to categorize myself in that one too! Haha. Group studying is also a type of revision group for me too. I usually study alone especially when I do advanced studying (which it happens only once in a blue moon). In class, I always choose my friends because they are easy to work with but however, when the teacher do count-offs or they will choose our partners, my face will turn very gloomy by then. Haha. Anyway, thank you for commenting!

I prefer to study alone as well. When I'm studying with a group, I feel like we all get distracted and end up spending way more time than we would need if we were studying alone. I prefer to study on my own, and then go hang out with friends, not study with my friends. If I did that, I would probably be failing! :)

I am in the high school now,I know it is different from the university, but I just can't study with other people. When I am not alone, I can't focus my attention,I think for everything except my lessons. The other people distract me. When I study, I have to be alone- even if somebody is just sitting in the same room, I can't focus. But I guess it is something individual - there are people, who are ok with other people around them, while they are studying. For me group studying is impossible.
