I am one proud mother. My daughter graduated yesterday from the University of the Philippines. The 100th commencement exercises was even graced by the President of the Philippines Benigno Aquino III as the keynote speaker. The graduation was a solemn and momentous occasion. The 4k+ graduates were bestowed their Bachelor's Degree, others their Master's and Doctorate, and, everyone being called islokar ng bayan or the people's scholars, graduated with honors! The University of the Philippines has many traditions. One of these was the burning of the torch during the graduation ceremonies. And we saw that yesterday, a sign of hope, of wisdom, and thanksgiving. I am one proud mother. And my daughter is one proud UP graduate. We snapped some photos of the sunflowers that bloom only in time for graduation, to honor the graduates. My daughter and I are both indebted to this university who helped my daughter bloom. Thank you!

Congratulations! You deserved it, like all people from UP they are all "iskolar" ng bayan so they have the debt to pay the country? I hoped, though I'm not one from UP I feel the duty. I was also the Iskolar of PGMA before and having been there in EDSA 2 in 2001 it feels as if the government repaid me I mean the Arroyo admin. I was a Iskolar for one year in my Bachelor's degree during that time I was a volunteer teacher for Gawad Kalinga in the neighboring municipalities of Misamis Oriental especially those in the hinterland part and when I graduated I got a teacher exchange offer from North Carolina from the U.S.A but I did not push through at that time my Mother was fighting TB and pneumonia,I said I'm going to work here in the Philippines for a couple of years as a private tutor for students who mostly come from Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan. Until now two years after I'm still here few meters from a Jesuit university waiting for students to arrive for their tutorial which is after their class. I hope your daughter will impart something too in this country and not to go abroad immidiately. Best Regards!

SERVE THE PEOPLE! That is the parting slogan that the university imparted to the graduates. My daughter is heeding that, and I do pray that she gets through the service all right. rock, why don't you apply for a teaching post at the Ateneo. Then you can work on your MA. The Jesuits are very generous. I know 'coz I was once their scholar, too.

hahaha!Jesuits they are getting old most of them,I kind'a laugh about it.but anyway yes they are very good and our city owe them their sacrifices they made in building parishes. I'm already in my completion of my MA in Special Education in Mindanao University the ateneo here lack the requirement to open a Graduate School for that, and I plan to work abroad get married have kids and come back building classrooms for the poorest of the poor and take care of my Mom.

I warned her about how tough it will be, as she meets people from all walks of life. I told her that the university, difficult the life as it already is, is nothing compared to the real world. She gave me a long look, as if telling me that she is totally prepared....

Congratulations tita eileenleyva! I hope I could make my parents proud when I graduate! I still have three years to go, I'm going to be in second year college this coming June. I have a classmate in UP Diliman and he told me that studying in UP is really hard. Once again, I have to congratulate your daughter and you again!

In UP, the students always learn the hard way. Professors mean business, and that means education and discipline, honor and excellence must be in every students vocabulary.

Wow!!!, University of the Philippines graduate; more than being a proud mom. Your daughter is truly and indeed an intelligent one because from the start of her registration to that university is like entering a trial court analyzing her to be chosen as one of the acquitted to graduate in the end. Congratulations !!! SUCCESS is already reached after the long journey of struggle.

That is a kinda strange way of describing the UPCAT and the UP education, but you are definitely right! Now, the real court proceedings begins...

I will have to agree with you. Many times, I get to talk to these kids and I couldn't help but simply be amazed by their ideas. There is one boy who said that his goals in life are not confined to computer engineering, his major. In a year's time, he is already a member of the Philippine wrestling team!

In my own opinion, every parent who sees their kid finishing and earning a degree are very proud ones. When I graduated in college, my 2 brothers were confined in the hospital because of the Dengue outbreak in the Philippines. But, I saw my mother in tears while she was escorting me as I receive my diploma. Congratulations to your daughter! You are such a proud mother!

I felt the same way, rainey. I had to control the emotions as I watched my daughter play on the keyboard the graduation song. She even composed it.

Her teachers advised her to ask PARI to put a copyright on her song, for intellectual property rights. And one prof is already asking permission if she would permit her song be their college's official grad song...mmm...

Congratulations to your daughter (and also to her proud mama!) I've never been lucky enough to be able to attend any of my convocations (some personal problem arises and I can't make it). I've had my certificates posted home. Though my parents are proud of me (especially with my last accomplishment ...lots of hard work raising a family, working and studying)...they would have loved to be there at a graduation ceremony. OH well! Maybe I can try once more and get another degree :P

Hearty Congratulations dear Eileenleyva on getting a degree by your daughter from the University of Philippines! I should Congratulate your daughter too on achieving this success and making you a proud parent! You need and deserve all the compliments for your upbringing, guidance and timely advises to make her grow as a responsible and wise student to have attained the Degree from the University! I can understand the feelings and happiness one can experience at this moment as my son also graduated an an Engineer and I too underwent through the same feelings as you are going right now! Some times I feel the time passes so quickly and fast, that it was hard for me to believe that my son who was a kid got graduated! This is something like feeling of the mother bird when the young ones they start learn how to fly independently for their survival! I think this is the first step of weaning in their life! Thanks for starting such a nice and positive response and you made my mood and I am really in the state of happy mood now, having suffered bit ill health yesterday! All the best to you and your beloved daughter!

AKRao, the childhood part also flashed before my eyes as I watched the college graduation rites. I also could't believe it that this was the baby I was cuddling, the toddler I was teaching, the little girl who was learning fast and asserting her own identity. Now she is all grown and had hurdled college, all on her own merits! I am so much humbled. God gave me the most wonderful blessings of all.

Congratulations, to you and you daughter. You obviously have done a fine job raising you daughter to be a responsible young lady. I am in college, a senior, and will be graduating soon. I am looking forward to that grand day. Young ladies are now taking the college campuses by storm; most of my classes are filled with females. The professor made a commit about how, in the future, women will be in positions that men now have because the men have stop going to college. Again, congratulation to all.

Uh-oh, that is a fact, Angel, women are so flexible they can juggle home and work, and still stay sane. You have to work harder. But your consolation is: women cannot also endure without the men!

Congrats to u. I'm sure u must be very proud of your daughter as it's not easy to be a degree holder. Her hard work has finally paid off along with your patience and hard earned money in seeing her go so far in life. My brother should be graduating soon as well, and he will be the first degree holder in the family. Is your daughter the first in the family too?

Hmmm, Sanitary, I think my family has a penchant for degrees... We simply love staying in the academe! Truth be told, degrees are not guarantees for money. More often than not, my cousins and brothers give their clients pro bono. Support your brother. A degree will put him on a pedestal...

Hi Ms. Eileen! Congratulations! Any mom in your position would be very happy. I hope that these people's scholars would be able to serve their own country rather than be tempted to the big salaries abroad. I saw the interview of the SummaCum Laude John Gabriel Pelias, who got one of the highest grade in the history of UP, he said that he is ready to give back to the country and institution that supported his academic pursuits by teaching at his alma mater when classes resume in June. I hope his fellow batch mates would do the same.

The university automatically hires graduates with the laudes. The academe needs their prowess in their respective disciplines. John Pelias did say he intends to teach, and perhaps by doing so, he could also pursue his MS and his PhD. I am sure many will learn from him and hew will be able to bestow his knowledge to many...

Congratulations! My boss is like you, her daughter also graduated in UP yesterday. She was one of the cumlaude and her course, i think, is Foreign Languages. Yes, she told us to that the President is their guest and their tradition too. She was very proud and happy, maybe I will too if I we're in your place. The entrance examination for one is very difficult and only few student could enter the university. By having your daughter to graduate in a prestigious school here in the Philippines is something that all mothers would want. I'm sure that they will be sought after by big companies. Goodluck to your daughter, I know she will have a brighter future!
