My daughter's teacher would always insist me to assist my daughter on her writings. My daughter can read by her own without any help it's only her writing skills that is not good. My daughter is only 5 years old and I know that not every children can write legibly at the same time. Does it really matter to have good penmanship on the first grade of elementary?

Not really. But if you would like to train her to have a fine and nice penmanship, it's better. I guess your daughter's teacher has a lot of paper work to check and I guess she is having hard time reading it. It's a good practice though, if your child could practice her handwriting. It's a little stepping stone to success. I wish you the best of luck! Have a great day!

You're child is still developing her fine motor skills. There is no need to rush 'coz eventually she'll learn to write eligibly. She's still young and I could also remember when I was at her age, I couldn't even recognize my own handwriting because it really looked like a hurricane has visited my paper..

At my childrens school they do expect it to be well thought out and legible in everything they write. And of course if your child doesn't keep up with paces you'll forever be hearing about it. It's not easy to be a student or a parent and dealing with the school systems expectations.

Hi. elaidha. Welcome to myLot! When your child is still this young, they have many days and more years to write legibly. When my son was in the second grade, he wrote very legibly. His teacher told me so too. It is great that your daughter can read really well too. As she becomes older, I am sure that her penmanship will become so much more better than it already is too.I think that her teacher should not place so much of emphasis on how your daughter's handwriting should be. Your child will learn on her own. I am sure that she will begin to write neatly as the days go by.

We are on the same boat Elaidha! My son's teacher insist that my son needs improvement on his handwriting. Goodness! I don't want to insist on my son, because the more I insist the more he becomes frustrated. I observed that he likes to be the first always. He wants to finish his work fast not minding if he was doing it right. He always wants to be ahead when we are just walking.
He was just 4 years old when he started in school and in Kindergarten when he was supposed to be in Nursery. He was the youngest in his class but the assessment of the school placed him at a higher level. I transferred him to another school and he needs to repeat kindergarten again because of his age.
Like you my son also reads well. He was already reading a simple book when he was just 3. I know that children has their own way of learning things. Some best learn when they hear it(auditory), some are visual learners. We just need to know their learning style. I really don't like the traditional school style where children will conform to what should be learned at that stage than them adjusting to the children. Most progressive schools do that but they can be quite pricey in my country.
