How do you spend the waiting time?

Last Sunday my husband had a rash all over his body and he called the doctor. Our own doctor was closed, because it was Sunday, but he got an appointment in a different clinic. We live on an island and one doctor covers the entire island during the weekend, so there was a lot of waiting time. Unforunately we didn't bring anything to read, and it was a little boring to sit in the room for hours.
How do you spend the waiting time when you have to wait for an appointment? Do you read, talk to the others or do something different?

I travel everyday 25 kilometers. I commute by train. We have local trains and metro trains are not available. Travelling takes a lot of time due to traffic clearing. I play games and listen to music in my mobile. In the morning I take my newspaper with me and sometimes carry magazines with me. This is the best way to gain knowledge and spend time

Bringing a sketch book sounds like a good idea. I sometimes draw in my notebook if I have to wait for something, but it is quite small and a real sketch book would probably be a better choice. I don't have an ipod or a phone where I am able to listen to music so I mostly listen to music in the car, but it would be nice to be able to listen to music when I have to wait for a long time. That would probably make the waiting time less boring.

It must be nice to be able to use Mylot from your phone. I have internet access on my phone, but it is very, very slow and it would take me much too long to read a discussion or write something, so I prefer to use my computer at home. I like to use my cell phone is other ways, and I often call my friends or send them a text message if I have wait for something.

It sounds like we have some interests in common, because I also like to read, write and draw. I always carry a notebook in my bag and I use it in many different ways. I write downs my thoughts and my ideas, and sometimes I write poems or letters to my friends. I also draw in my notebook. I draw a kind of fantasy pictures. Some of them I just keep and some of them I turn into sculptures. I don't really know Odesk, I have heard the name before, but I don't know what of site it is. Is it an online money making site?

Normally I also carry something to read. Some of my friends think that it is a little funny that I bring my books everywhere, but I like to read if I have to wait for a train, wait in line etc. Last Sunday I had forgotten my book at home, and I regretted that when I realize how long we had to wait. I don't have an ipod, but I would like to get one. In the past I always carried by walkman in my bag when I left the house. I don't use cassette tapes anymore, but it would be nice to be able to listen to music outside the house again

You just gave me an idea to something I could do. I also knit, but I only do it in my home. If I know that I will have to wait for a long time I could bring the things that I am working on at the moment. That would be a nice way to pass the time...

I agree. I have a few bags of different objects I'm always working on. One i carry to the school to knit while waiting in line to get my granddaughters. And 1-3 items to knit while at dr or somethinglike that.I keep smaller objects like dish cloths, scarves, etc for drs.

Magazines or newspapers are usually my first choice as well. Sometimes I get the chance to read some of the magazines that I don't buy myself (if they are available in the waiting room) In past I listened to music on my walkman, and would like to get an ipod so that I would be able to listen to music again. Going shopping also sounds like a nice choice, but I usually end up spending too much money

I always have a book in my bag, and array of games on my phone. I also have a lot of music on my phone. I switch between reading and playing games, all the while listening to music. Last year, I bought a cheap android tablet and I filled it with games and lots of ebooks.
I always have a lot of things in my bag to keep me busy cause I'm very impatient. It really annoys me when I have to wait. So what I do to keep my annoyance in check is to do a lot of different things to keep me entertained

Having a lot of different things to keep you entertained sounds like a good idea. I am also pretty impatient and I feel that I am wasting the time if I have to wait for hours. I like to bring a book or some magazines. I don't have an ebook reader, so I usually read printed books instead, but I guess it would be easier to carry an ebook reader instead of printed books.

I also like to read while I wait. I don't know why I didn't bring a book last Sunday, but I guess I didn't expect to wait for several hours. If we ever have to go to that clinic again I will remember something to read.

My favorite thing to do while waiting is to walk around the vicinity, or talk to my friends. If they are not there, I would usually send them messages or I would call them. Moreover, I am not the type of person who would love to wait for something or someone. So most of the times when I have to wait, I usually do these stuff. Oh, if there are magazines available, I read them. Good day!

Talking to friends is a nice way to spend the time. I don't like waiting either, but if I have something to read it is easier to pass the time. From now on I am going to remember a book every single time. Watching the surroundings and playing the same games on the cell phone all the time can get a little boring...

That is true, it depends on the place or the circumstanses. In some waiting rooms there are plenty of things to read, toys for the children and other things to do while you are waiting. In the waiting room where we were last Sunday there were no no tv and no magazines and most of us were pretty bored. I looked at the paintings and used my phone, but aside from that there weren't much to do. Next time I will make sure to bring a book or some magazines.

Whenever I'm in the waiting room I usually sit in the corner by myself and read my book. I find that time moves faster when you're distracted. I just hate not bringing anything with me in the waiting room because there's the people who are constantly staring at me and then I feel uncomfortable and I'm looking down on the floor trying to daydream but I can't because the seats aren't comfy. So I tend to bring my book or my Kindle because at least that has variety of books and when I get tired of reading I can play a game.

I also like to read when I have to spend some time in a waiting room. I think that is a good way to pass the time, and I have an interesting book I don't get bored. Last Sunday I didnt bring a book, because I didnt expect much waiting time, but I regretted that when I discovered how long we actually had to wait. There are usually some magazines or newspapers in the waiting rooms in my country, but in this waiting room there was nothing to read.

I have a such a big fan of my Iphone. I have so many apps downloaded and i never get tired of playing games on my IPhone. I make sure i have my phone charged to full whenever i get out of the house because i am sure i am going to need all that battery before i end up using it all before i come back home.

I have a few games on my phone, but I get tired of them pretty fast, because they aren't that interesting. It would be nice to have many different games to choose from, that would be a nice way to spend the waiting time I think. I am able to use the internet from my phone, but it is very, very slow. I use it if I want to want to find an address, a phonenumber or something like that, but I need a lot of patience

When we have a cell phone we are able to call or text friends while we are waiting. I also did that, because I didn't have anything to read. I spent some of the time on deleting old text messages and pictures, not very interesting, but at least I was doing something useful instead of totally wasting the time.

Since I have a nice cellphone, so I won't feel bored when I am waiting. Usually I will check my emails or post weibo. Sometimes I will also watch a movie. I don't like to waste the time by doing nothing when I am waiting.

I remember I had to wait for very long each time when I went to see my midwife, half hour easily. Fortunately, she has a lot of magazines put out so we can read it while waiting. I am quite and I don't like talking to strangers so I didn't talk to any other pregnant women unless they start a topic.
I hate having to wait when it comes to appointment like that but I don't mind waiting at my midwife because I know how patient and nice she is for each expecting mothers, she answers all the question that we ask andnot so rushing to see the next one.
I don't like having to wait at the pedatrician office though because I don't want to sit at the room with all the sick kids or babies which might possibly gives germs to my baby.

Hi Porcospino,
Very relevant question indeed. Waiting for the train, bus, friends or doctors, the feeling is more or less the same. If you know beforehand that you might have to wait for a bit longer time it would not not be so killing but if it is unpredicted then it is worse than hell.
Not only you and me all people at one occasion or the other have had the experience.
Usually I look for a news paper, not for the news but for the cross words. This is very interesting and time consuming too. I hate to talk to people while waiting if they are not like minded ones.
Second things I do is to make call with my mobile phone. I call them who I had not called for months together or text message or play games.
Somehow you have to pass the waiting time.

That is true, when we know that we will have to wait it isn't so bad, but when we aren't prepared for the situation is much harder. When we know it beforehand we are mentally prepared for it and able to plan the time. Last Sunday my husband and I weren't prepared for it, we just moved to this island and we didn't know that there was only one doctor during the weekend. I guess we were a little naive when we didn't expect much waiting time, and now we know that the situation here is different from the situation in the big cities.
Next time I will definately bring something to read, because there are no newspapers and no magazines in the waiting room. I also like to solve the crosswords in the news papers, it is a nice way to spend the time and I usually learn something new.

Hi Porcospino,
You're not alone for having that experience. Long waiting really made us bored especially if we are not prepared. For me, I make sure to have in my bag a pocket book to read on while waiting. Or a book of puzzles to solve just to let the time passed by. If nothing as such, I would probably take the risk if someone will be willing to have a chat with a stranger. Just to have something to do, otherwise, I would rather try to sleep, but that is when I'm with someone who can I ask to look after me while sleeping. Or we can try to find if the place is providing something to read like magazines or newspaper, or the least we can do is spend money to chat via our mobilephones to let someone knows we need someone to talk to. That's all in my mind during boring time in waiting. Hope next time better to always slip something to read in your bag to avoid idle time and be bored. Happy mylotting.
