I have always love swimming right from childhood, me and my friend do go for swimming on week ends. Though we started learning how to swim at the same time, i notice that he does learn faster than me in swimming. It always take me longer period before i can grab stuffs in swimming. Now, my friend is the best swimmer in my university and i am no where to be found among the first 200, so should i say he is more gifted than me in swimming or should i accept that as a natural phenomenon or maybe i need to work harder to create myself a space among the top swimmer in my school. Please advice me.

Everybody has the same capabilities, but every person is unique and some will just have natural talent for some things and some other people are naturally bigger, stronger, faster than the rest.
So, in my opinion, no need to worry to catch up with your friend regarding swimming skills, but that doesn't mean you should to stop trying. It might cost you a little more effort because your talent might be on a different area that your friend lacks of.
Don't worry, Be happy.

You are actually right, i realize that swimming is my interest but i'm not really good at it. But like the common say "practise make perfection" i think if i can devote more time to it then i should able to come up with a nice thing. I really appreciate your post and i will give your suggestion a try.

I think some people are born to have the talent of swimming. At first, they are not afraid of water. So they can learn it faster than others. Second, their body figure is suitable in the water. Michael Phelps is a good example. His arms are long and he has made a good achievement in swimming.

i guess you should do more drills, more jogging to make your legs strong and do some gym exercise. training twice a day will help you to increase your speed.

I believe that swimming can be considered a talent. There are some people who are very exceptinonal and skilled in this sport. yet others can barely grasp the concept. some people can make swimming look like an artform rather than a sport or an exercise. it's all about the heart and soul you are willing to put into it.

Hi there, Welcome to MyLot.
Nothing is impossible in this world unless you give it all the required effort. If you want to make it to the top list of swimmers, you need to put in some extra effort and be more competitive. But sometimes, it depends on the capability of an individual too. You might want to add in some more dedication and effort towards swimming and you will make it.
Good Luck

Yes I think swimming is a talent somethings come natural for people and others have to work at it. If you want to be one of the top swimmers at your school I would continue trying, and yes you have to accept the fact that sometimes things are easier for others, but that doesn't mean you can't do it because you can. best of luck to you

I think swimming is a skill. It can be learned and mastered by constant practice. Maybe the talent that your friend has is the ability to learn faster, that is why he is able to master the skills in swimming faster. But that doesn't mean that you will not be able to achieve what he has achieved

I think that swimming can be classed as being a talent as there are different stages of swimming ability. I love swimming myself although I have not been swimming in years and I kind of miss it now! I think it's the whole finance thing that put me off and regular swimming has become quite expensive now. I used to go to my local pool and I remember feeling intimidated at times as I was swimming my lengths and then you would have this swimming guru enter the pool and starting with the butterfly stroke!
Swimming used to be my favourite exercise and it still is if I could afford it but for the time being I now class myself as an enthusiastic cyclist and I cycle on a daily basis! I think that regular swimming makes you feel good and that's another regret that I have. I have asthma and swimming has always been recommended to me as a kind of way of improving my asthma and putting me in the driving seat so to speak! Anyway, I wish you well with your swimming, it's truly a good path to follow! Andrew

Hie friend there is no need for disappointment. Yeah it is true that some people are gifted and talented. But if you see closely swimming is just same as any other activity.. according to me if you swim and practice daily you too will be a pro swimmer all you have to do is practice.. The reason your friend is a champ may be because he has practiced a lot and if he has not then he could have some imp tricks to swim.. Dont think in the negative way.. always be positive in your approach.. practice swimming more and surely you will reap the benifits from it.
All the best my friend enjoy your life

In my own opinion, swimming or other sports is not a talent. It starts with a desire then a dream. But all of these will just go to waste if there is no perseverance to excel in this field.
Most great athletes have spent most of their time and life in training grounds. And they didn't stop until they have perfected their craft.I think it is more of a skill that is enhanced by constant practice.

In my opinion swimming can not be considered a talent.Swimming is something that you have to learn. As you have said you and your friend started swimming at the same time and you notice he is better than you.Maybe he is really anxious to learn to swim and he put his mind to it.If you do the same, in no time you will swim side by side with him.

Swimming is not a talent but it depend on how physically fit you are, I mean you need to have a good motor skill where you need to coordinate you body movement and it must be tally with you hands and legs movement. Those people who can control their body, hands and legs well enough, they can catch up swimming faster and easier. Children always can learn faster than adult because they are more energetic and their body are more flexible. But what I can say is, practice make perfect, so to get better in swimming, you need to do more practice and you will definitely swim better.

yes any skills tat is above good is talent which is excellent, some sport people just has the talent to go beyond the normal skills to become world champion. This include swimming, talented people do have more advantage and more natural in the given talent. However, talentless people may able to catch up with practise, technique and consistances.

I'll answer the discussion title first, no. For me, there's no such thing as talent, when it comes to something that everybody in the world is capable of. You have to work hard for what sport or activities that you want. Your friend also did that, he followed the instructions, learned it and he mastered it. It all depends on how a person do their thing. If a person is talented in swimming, then there's no need for them to practice swimming at all. So if you're feeling bad right now, don't be. There will be times that you'll have a better talent to master. Good day!
