Why are there homeless people?

Yesterday my boyfriend and I were driving by the homeless shelter where he volunteers. I saw a huge ine of people and wasn't sure what it was for. It was all homeless people lined up for food. I felt bad that I never realized how many there were and it made me wonder how so many people could be without a home.. Where their life went of track, and their story.
I think everyone deserves to have a home, and with all the government help, etc, I don't understand why everyone can't have a roof over their head?

Hello for3ver. I agree with you. Quite a few of those homeless are nothing but free loaders. I watched a program by John Strossel a few evenings ago.

Some of them are making $100 a day. There is one woman that clames she trying to get home but she has a house a couple of blocks away from where she is begging. You should watch all Strossels videos on Youtube. It's a real eye opener. Some people are on the streets because they really have no chou8ice but the rest are just moochers.

I've heard a couple stories like that. Some have huge houses and a lot of money but all they do is beg on the streets. It's surprising because you'd think people would be embarassed to do that..javascript:__doPostBack('ctl00$cphMainContent$lbStart','')

There are lots of reasons there are so many. With unemployment so high & with the banks foreclosing on so many homes there are lots of people that are homeless & jobless. Once you hit that stage it's very difficult to get out of. If you were suddenly kicked out of your home & had no family to stay whith where would you go? Many of the shelters are overcrowded & have a waiting list. Where would you store your stuff? It would be hard to find a job. Most companies wouldn't risk hiring someone who didn't have a residence or somewhere they could be contacted. How would you even get a shower or wash your clothes to be presentable for work?
I had a friend staying with my family for a while. He was on a waiting list to get into the closest shelter that was over an hour away. We were already struggling to get by without adding another mouth to feed but were able to let him stay for the 3 months it required for him to actually get in.
Frankly there's just not enough goverment help or funding available to keep up with demand.

That's a problem in my city as well. They are turning a hotel into housing for homeless people but there is a lot of controversy because of the area. It's downtown so it will attract a lot of violence, etc..

Not too sure, our downtown is just really bad.. 90 % of it is probably homeless people and nobody else really goes down there..

I'm pretty sure there are very few actual homeless people. A homeless person would be one who was actively searching for a home. Perhaps you are referring to 'street people' who live in the streets. In this case the street is their home and they wouldn't thank you for anything better.
Also there are people who do have a structural house, but spend their time in the streets.
A classic example of this is the lady in Toronto who is chauffeured to her begging corner each morning, where she begs all day and her chauffeur returns in the evening with her big Cadillac, to take her back home to her mansion in the suburbs.

Yes I was talking about the homeless people who live on the street. I heard the story about the lady in Toronto doing that and it was really susprising. I didn't think many people gave money to people on the streets, and definitely not enough for them to have a mansion!

Hi for3everfamous, Its sad still many stay below poverty line that they cannot have even the basic amenities of life that is shelter. This shows the economic imbalance, rich people can afford 4 to 5 homes, but there are people who cannot afford even a hut or roof. A development of country depends on balanced economy and government should take actions to provide shelter so as we individuals who can help them at least way.

Very true there are so many rich people who have more than enough. A lot of them don't try to help and just ignore what's going on with others who don't have as much.. If we could get the rich people to all care too it could help things.

This has happened to me before. Once driving downtown to also see a large line filled with people only trying to eat. This opened my eyes it really did. Made me all the more thankful for all I have. I do think the government is doing something, but just not everything we know they can do. So people are just homeless because of hard times. I'm sure you seen the Will Smith "pursuit of happiness" it was/is a true story. They went through really hard times because of lack of money turned into being homeless. Forced to sleep in a train station, then when all hope wad lost decided to stay in a homeless shulter. Times are just hard and this could happen to anybody.

It opened my eyes too and made me more grateful. People always compare themselves to other people who are rich/middle class and we forget about all the people without a home at all. So we think we don't have a lot, when we actually do.

I have just read a story: his wife is sick. he don't have enough money for treatment. He sold the only house to care her. They can look for enough money to buy a new house. They're becoming hopeless.

That is sad and is another problem that needs to be fixed. In Canada where I live we have healthcare and don't have to pay for treatment. I'm sure in some other parts of the world if you get sick it can cost you a lot and you can only afford treatment to survive if you are rich.

I assume the story is different for every homeless person. I know that in Guatemala there are homeless people living on the dump, and even though the government has provided housing for them they don't move. Cause where they live is all they know and they're afraid of going somewhere else. I think that might be the case even in America and other nations. Some people just don't want to live any other way. But like I said in the beginning, every homeless person's story is different. Why don't you ask some of them when you're at the shelter?

I have never been inside the shelter myself. We were just driving by because the shelter is located downtown. I think I will volunteer there too though one day.

Here in our place, there are also some people who are homeless and are living in slums or under bridges where they can have some protections in day and night time.
Most of these people are from provinces who seek and hope for a greener pasture in the city.
But since they don't have any relatives,or they might have relatives but even their relatives are also poor ones that are just renting...so they can not just live with their relatives.
Now,these people while seeking or looking for any job, they also look for any shelter and since they don't have money, they end up being homeless.
And the more people coming from provinces with same story makes the population of homeless people bigger and bigger everyday.
No matter how the government are giving them housing projects, the population rate is also flowing that housing projects are not enough to sustain these homeless people.

It is really hard to recover if you're part of a poverty cycle.. You only know what you learn from your relatives at a young age, if you never see what its like to live a normal life.. You think the streets is fine..
