I used to think Dobermans were the meanest, most unfriendly dogs out there. I would only see them in the movies as snarling guard dogs and they didn't look approachable at all!!
When our German Shepherd died, our Vet told us to try a Doberman. He said Dobermans were more intelligent and more even tempered than Shepherds. He showed us the scars on his arms and said .."These scars are from German Shepherds, not Dobermans."
That surprised me because I always thought Shepherds were more calm. I did want a short hair dog (our Shepherd was a Shepherd/Husky mix) We visited the Doberman rescue center and adopted a Dobie. We have had only Dobies ever since! They are truly affectionate, protective, smart dogs.
lol..I find so many people make wide circles around the Dobies when we go out. We have two now.
I would recommend a Doberman to anyone for companionship and as a watch dog. The rescue center will let you take them on a trial basis and return them if it doesn't work out after a short period of time. I like having two dogs to entertain each other when we are not around.
Anyone else a Doberman lover??

I think dobermans are beautiful and I would consider owning one. My parents recently got a german shepherd and it seems like they are having such a hard time training him. He seems to be fearful and high strung, which can be dangerous. But I feel that any dog can be a good pet with enough work and training. I actually think it would make me feel very safe if people walked wide circles around my dog!

Hi johnsobr,
Thank you for the comment. I hope your parents can work out the problems with their Shepherd. I agree most dogs can be trained, but then again I guess some dogs might be too difficult to handle for whatever reason.
You are correct, that can be dangerous.
My daughter trained our dogs to sit and face behind her when she is at the ATM machine..she feels soooooooo secure and safe...it's quite funny. She also always takes one when she goes out at night for instance when she goes to the grocery store. NO ONE comes up to the car..lol

I love Dobermans. My father had a Doberman when I was a teenager. She was a very smart dog and wouldn't hut a fly she was so nice but people were afraid of her because of their reputation. I used to love to walk her and people would go walk on the other side of the street because they were afraid. I loved that lol. Gave me a sense of power.
I would definitely get another Doberman. In fact I want a Doberman and a Miniature Pinscher for the contrast. I will get one when I have the time because right now because of my involves a lot of travel so I'm away from home a lot.
We had to put her down when she was only about five years old because of hip dysplasia because he couldn't afford the surgery.

dreamy1,
Thank you for your response! You are the first response to my first discussion at mylots!! (I mistakenly thought another one was, but I was wrong.) Geez I wish one could delete after posting. I have made a few mistakes and hate to see they are here permanently :(
LOL I like the idea of a regular Doberman and a Miniature Pinscher. Dobies are indeed wonderful dogs when you get to know them. I suppose that's true of all dogs.
Thank you again for the post!
