A lot of people here in the Philippines are afraid of cockroaches. Even boys are afraid of them, especially when they are flying. When I was younger, I wasn't really afraid of them, even the flying ones. Whenever I saw them, I would chase them with a slipper and try to kill them. When I saw them flying, I didn't care because I thought to myself, what are the chances that the cockroach would land on me? Right? Well that's what I thought when I was younger. When I entered college, both of the dormitories I lived in had several cockroaches running around the vicinity and I've had the worst experiences with them.
In my first college dorm, there was a time when a cockroach was flying around. Holding on to the belief that I mentioned earlier, I didn't care at all. BUT then! Voila! the cockroach landed on my face! shaaame! I panicked and screamed and tried to remove it from my face as fast as I could. I remember even feeling its hairy legs on my face for a second or so. GAAAAA! To make it all worse, this happened to me twice during my stay at that dormitory.
My second dorm was not any better at all. Cockroaches were creeping at its outside, literally. The worst experience that I've had with it was a time when I was just hanging out with my friend and was calmly talking about random stuff. Then suddenly, I felt something creeping on my back. NO, NOT ONLY ON MY SHIRT BUT ON MY BACK! Normally, I panicked and my friend panicked too. Being the best friend that she was, she tried to get rid of whatever it was that was crawling on my back. Soon enough, she discovered that it was a cockroach. UGH. TALK ABOUT BAD LUCK. She tried to get rid of it by shaking my shirt while I was all over the place. Eventually, she was able to shake it off and to my relief, had never happened to me again. AT least so far. I'm hoping that in the dormitory that I will be staying next in, there will be no more cockroaches so that I won't have to get the same experiences.
Anyway, cockroaches are misunderstood. People always say that when they get a weird something on their face the morning after they sleep, they were bitten by a coackroach. But when I studied parasitology, I learned soon that cockroaches are not capable of doing so. BUT! They are still the culprits. The hairy legs that cockroaches have actually carry tons of bacteria in them, so when they make a journey on your face, that's when they cause the weird something on your face to grow and make people eeek when they see you. Haha. Cockroaches like to eat cardboards. That's their main source of nutrition. So when you take parasitology and when it is asked if cockroaches are blood sucking vicious creatures, simply answer, NO and you'll get a lower chance of getting a zero. :) EEEk to Blatella germanica and the Periplaneta americana. :)

welcome to the club ofabiana! I also do admit that their smell is really really awful. I remember in our invertebrate anatomy that some of the lab classes were to dissect a cockroach. I dreaded the idea of it but it's a good thing that our professor didn't ask us to.

So let it be! Let them be forever misunderstood. Hahaha. I hate roaches. Especially if they are flying. Any mobile cockroaches around freaks me out. I wish cockroaches would just vanish the face of the earth! Haha.they are very dirty and is often found in canals, drainages.

unfortunately, that might notbe possible. you see, cockroaches have lived for a very very long time. studies show that they have not changed at all since then, meaning they really are well adapted. as a matter of fact, we even have a higher chance of becoming extinct compared to them.

I hate all insects and I got a phobia on them. Not really all, the only insects I'm not afraid off are butterflies and dragonflies. I hate insects especially cockroaches. Just seeing one makes me freak out very badly, seriously! This had been my only phobia since childhood. I always secure my room with an insecticide. I remember the times in my childhood when I don't have an insecticide in hand, and there is a cockroach in my room, i panic and i get out of my room quickly and i wake my mom up in the middle of the night to ask her to kill the cockroach!
When I read this, I felt the hard times and dirtiness and it brought out bad memories! But wait. I do not blame you. A good discussion, really. Sorry for the things I had said. Please, no offense.
I don't know how to overcome this. I felt very powerless, being overpowered by a cockroach. oh god. You may laugh. I really had the phobia.

oh no, it's okay. Im sorry if you had to go through my article. It must've been agonizing. Anyway, cockroaches are really harmless except for the bacteria that they carry. Its best to avoid their hairy legs.

Hi there, Welcome to MyLot.
After reading this discussion, I felt like something was creeping on my legs but thankfully there was nothing. Cockroaches simply freak me out. If there is one insect in the world i get disgusted with then it is gotta be Cockroach.
I mean , why do they have so many legs, A creepy little antenna and weird body... It is so tiny and cannot cause any harm but still it just makes me mad. If i see a single cockroach in my kitchen, I totally make spray it with Baygon Cockroach killer before it lays eggs and i see all its babies dancing in my kitchen.

haha.. Im sorry if I made you feel that way. I just had to share some of my worst experiences with them. Haha. But you really should kill cockroaches if you see one because they are carriers of tons of diseases.

Well cockroaches don't really scare me. Up until they fly, at which point I flail around and bolt for the nearest door! But hey, you're right, they are EXTREMELY misunderstood! Cockroaches, though decidedly "icky", are truly remarkable creatures and are quite arguably one of nature's masterpieces. They are extremely well equipped for survival and are exceedingly efficient scavengers since they eat most any organic material. They are even known to resist radiation exposure.. so hey, when WW-III sets in and mankind goes crazy with nukes, guess who will inherit the world? :D yup so better start loving them! or not.. xD probably not..

hahaha.. naaah! wouldn't want to.. it would even make me hate them more because they get to inherit the world. Anyway, it's like what our Ma'am Anna said, (or was it sir Go?) cockroaches have not changed for a very long long long time, meaning they are the most adapted creatures on earth. SUCKS TO KNOW THAT! Go Periplaneta, Blatella and Blatta! Raiza's missing here.

Aw! Freaking cockroaches. I am scared of these tooo. And the flying ones... I have had a few ugly experiences and worst - I did not have a girlfriend to sort it out
Anyways, These creatures as you say are the ones who spread so many illnesses around and now I know the reason - the germs and bacteria in their legs... oh hairy legs (I gotta be right as I do not want to type anything that would unleash their wrath on me)
Btw, I loved to read the way you put it and that made me respond... because normally I stay away from these - cockroaches - even the discussions where they are mentioned as they really give me a fright.

When I was reading your discussion, I remembered those times when the cockroaches love me. When I was still in Manila living in my cousin's house, I remembered there was this swarm of cockroaches that swarmed in the bedroom at the second floor. I was shocked but my brother said it has something to do with the weather or the earthquake that happened then. I was confused but I continued sleeping. Who knew, I forgot to put my blanket on. 3 big cockroaches crawled to my feet at the same time. I was shocked and I had to shrug them off! There was this time too tin school that a cockroach went inside my pants from somewhere on the ground, it was an activity period and I shrugged it off from my pants and there it was, jumping off from my pants, all of my classmates screamed and I squished it instantly with my shoes. Those were the times. Haha.

hahaha.. oh my! It's a good thing you were better at handling it! I don't know what I'd do if that happened to me. Haha.. I remember that there was a a time in my high school dormitory when this big insect landed on my shirt. It was really big and I was afraid of insects. I tried to remove it using my brush but it made a somewhat hissing sound that would've probably been "im gonna do something bad to you if you remove me from your shirt." So I stopped trying to remove it and just screamed. I almost cried. My dormates, especially my bestfriend rushed to me and removed the big bug using my brush. At first it was still crawling up, warning to crawl on my bare neck but fortunately my bestfriend was able to remove it. hahaha.
