I am looking to compress folders and files on my laptop and at the moment the only programme I know is winzip or winrar. These compress to zip files or Rar files but these do not save that much space on my laptop.
So what are the best compression software people know and also what's the best compression format to use to save space is is zip RAR or a different one?

Well there are a lot's of compression software, even you can use Ultra iso to compress. But the best is Winrar software to compress a file or folder. the only difference bitween rar and zip is that compression technique is different as rar do track by track compression and zip do byte by byte compression. But the best is Winrar. You can get it from the internet eaisly.
Even if you have a big file and you don't put it in a single removable media then you can split into parts a file using winrar. For example you have 3 cds and have a file of 2 GB then you can split it into 700MB 700MB1 and 600MB and then you can write on three CDs and again when you need to reassemble those files then you can eaisly do it again using winrar.

But Winrar lets you choose if you want it to compress it to zip or RAR so how do i get it to split a file like you are saying above do I need to make sure it is using the RAR compression setting?

Hi chillpill90, In winrar there is a option that if you want to split or not then you have to check a checkbox. and after doing that you will be able to access some grayed out options in which there are functions to choose options for splliting a file.

7-zip is also a good compressor. But still it will not save you a big time space. You can compress files like 12GB file 3GB space by using commands. But it is an elaborate and an advanced technique so just skip it.

well compression softwares really depend on the processing power of your computer. So in a way a good computer will compress files better than a bad one. But comparing compression softwares, the best is hmm.. i forgot the name but it has a 7 in its name oh 7-zip but i don't know if its true now.
But for me just use rar because it is the easiest to use with a good compression capabilities.

the best compression software would be uhar but it is very slow and often makes my system hang
you could find many pc games compress in these format if you have a habit of downloading them via torrent
but for regular use i prefer 7zip its fast easy and take very less memory and on top of all its free and much better than winrar and winzip
use it
