I miss the "Classics"

So hey I'm a big fan of the Pokemon series since I, much like most of you guys, grew up with it. But lately I've been noticing that the appearances and concepts of new generation pokemon seem to veer off from the original concept. I loved the very first season of pokemon where they had only 150 kinds of pokemon with set limitations for each. It was fun to see them like strange animals in an alternate world. They had a tangible and almost real feeling to them in the sense that they actually seemed believable as animal counterparts. But as seasons progress, more and more pokemon are introduced. Now, i was ok with this since a little growth is normally healthy for the story line. I liked the generation where totodile was intrduced as well as mudkip. But seasons after that seemed to be a bit too radical for my taste. Take for example the pokemon of the sinnoh region. Some of them are ok, sure I like a few, but they introduced pokemon like Lucario with the power of the so called "aura" and can talk. I mean whats up with that?? They literally destroyed the boundaries of pokemon!
Also, I've just recently watched the movie "Giratina and the Sky Warrior" featuring giratina and shaymen. I just don't get the whole concept of putting in a "reverse world" and a pokemon that can switch between forms and not "evolve". And as if it wasn't messed up enough, shaymen can actually talk (another talking pokemon)! This is too weird don't you agree? Plus I heard that theres going to be a new pokemon (or there is already) called Arceus which is supposed to be a pokemon god. Now that for me is over the top!
I miss the old version with good old squirtle, bulbasaur, and charmander! It was definitely the best pokemon version for me. I hope the writer get it together and get back to the classics :(

I like the original a lot too. I remember having posters and trading cards of pokemons and I even memorized them in the order of their number. It was fun. I enjoy the addition of all the new pokemons in the games, but not the anime. In fact, I've lost track of the pokemons in the anime. As far as I know, there are more than five hundred now.
I also miss the time when there were only a few legendary pokemon. Now, there are legendaries left and right. It's just weird that they all seem to represent the same elements anyway.

Absolutely! It used to be the just moltres, zapdos, and articuno. But now I can't even count how many there are. Not to mention them being so overpowered. Phew. Jumping through dimensions, granting wishes, controlling other pokemon. Haha. Whats up with that?

Hahaha! Exactly. It seems that every region that Ash finds himself in has an ovely powerful legendary pokemon! And hey, I watch the pokemon movies as well as I noticed that in almost all of the ancient legends include Ash being a great savior or something like that. First it was when the three legendary birds were fighting and the world would turn to "Ash" (pertaining to him). Next was the Aura Master movie where Ash supposedly had the same legendary aura as the original master of Lucario. Its a very funny coincidence. :)) Ash is EPIC apparently.

Wow. O.O I didn't know that. I stopped watching the anime a while back. I just play the video games. Then again, I also watched a few movies, so I can guess who those other legendaries you mentioned are. And about them being uber powerful, yeah. It's kind of a drag. How many super powerful creatures can a world take? I bet their world should've been ripped to shreds by all those warring creatures a long time ago. XD

I liked the old one...I totally gave up watching after the first few changes. At uni though, we've recently all bought old gameboy SPs on ebay, and started playing the old pokemon games, with bulbasaur and charmander. A few of the boys are playing the totodile generation too. It might be worth a go for you? I bought my gameboy, a case, charger, headphones and two pokemon games for about £20 on ebay. I definitely think it's been worth it, we've got random gaps between lectures etc which aren't enough to go home but work perfectly for a little pokemon!

Haha. Yeah totodile's generation is a bit acceptable for me. For me the line was crossed right around chimchar/turtwig/piplup generation. It started looking a lot like digimon at that stage. Such a shame. :(

I totally agree with you. One thing I like about pokemon is that unlike Digimon, it still sticked to reality a bit. I also watched the Giratina and the sky warrior episode and I found myself to be lost among the new set of pokemons. I also missed the first set of pokemons, which as you know I memorized one by one and in order.

Exactly! One main point me and my brothers always say is that pokemon is slowly becoming digimon! Which is sad...

Haha! I kinda thought you'd like Darkrai! But yeah, I think the kids these days (well at least the younger ones) have lost sight of those classic pokemon our generation used to know and love. Blastoise and Venosaur are still the best for me! :D

Hey, I agree with you. I was and still am a big, big fan of the Pokemon series. I, like you, also grew up playing and watching the Pokemon. I, however, got into Pokemon during the end of the 2nd Generation with Totodile and Cyndaquil. I started playing Pokemon right around when Pokemon Crystal came out, and I loved the game. It brings back so many memories. I loved the first two generations, they were great. The "original" 150 Pokemon were great, but they were not MY original memories since I, once again, got into Pokemon in the 2nd Generation. In my opinion, the 2nd Generation stayed true to the series and was excellent. Then when the 3rd Generation came out, I feel it started to stray away from the original model. It definitely started getting weirder and started to get farther and farther from the ones I grew up with. I just shrugged it off and went back to playing it since it was still a very fun game in the end. When Generation 4 came out, I was at first a little disappointed because the Pokemon were not as good as they could have been. I knew at that point, they definitely started to lose a lot of their ideas. However, I just shrugged it off once again and I played it, and eventually liked it enough. In my opinion, the 4th Generation game was better than the 3rd Generation, but the anime is very bad for the 4th Generation. Then when I heard a Pokemon Black and White and the 5th Generation was coming out, I knew it was the end of the franchise. The Pokemon they revealed did not look anything like Pokemon. I was very disappointed. I was not originally going to get a Generation 5 Game, but my friend talked me into getting it. I am not as upset as when it first came out, but I am still not very warm towards the fifth Generation. I think they have much room for improvement. Hopefully they will go back to the old originals since they are obviously the most fun because we grew up with them. To me, nothing will ever beat Pokemon Crystal.

True, up until the 2nd and even the 3rd generation, I think they still stayed true to the original concept of the series. But the next generations started looking too odd for. Also, not stopping at the appearances of the pokemon, the names also seemed to lose their creativity. I loved memorizing the names of the first 150 pokemon because they all sounded like funny puns which also gave a little insight to the abilities of the pokemon. The 4th and 5th generation all have "jiberish" sounding names which don't really make sense to me anymore. I truly hope for an overhaul back to the classics..
