Laptops, netbooks, and tablets

Among the three, I still prefer a powerful laptop. Sure, the latter two are both handy and convenient for traveling, but a laptop is the most reliable and still the most economical in terms of getting the value of your hard-earned cash. I mean, what are we really paying for those netbooks and tablets? The fact that they're easy to lug around or that they have long battery lives? Or are you the kind of people who are attracted to the fad of getting their hands on the latest technology? I for one hate the fact that we're turning into a society of techno-idiots. Just because a gadget looks savvy and unique doesn't mean that it's worth the money. Sure, I'm not in a position to tell you what you should buy with your money but take it as a practical advice, THINK before buying.

I agree.I own a laptop and I thought of selling it in exchange of a smaller and more portable netbook but now I had change my mind.My friends own netbooks and when I have the chance to use it, I still prefer to use my laptop because it has a wider screen.Sometimes I can't even read the text clearly if I'm using a netbook.Aside from that, most netbooks does not have CD/DVD drive which can be needed in program installations and watching movies. What I'm applying now is to add memories on my laptop for it to run faster.

I would want to own a powerful one if it were cheap. Whether laptops, netbooks or tablets is not an issue as long as it can serve my needs within budget. I trust we all have the wisdom to know what we want and what we need. THINK before buying sometimes may end nothing gets done. Afterall the networth of such is depreciating very fast. LOL.

I just got a new laptop. It was 50.00 more than a netbook! But for that 50. I got 5.6 more inches of screen and a full size keyboard. granted , the only traveling I will do with it is going up and down the stairs in my house.I wasn't looking for something to lug around!

Hi, Maybe this is not the right topic to discuss, but still I have got a problem with my laptop and I hope some of you knowledgable mylotters can help me out. My laptop is not opening properly, I mean it should normally open at 90 degree, but the screen remains blank, only if and when I take the laptop screen further back, does the screen springs to life. What is the matter?? Does my laptop need a tech doctor??

I notice that you didn't choose to include desktop computers in this discussion. However, that is really what I prefer the most of all. The reason for that is that the screen is larger and that makes it easier for me to use. So, out of the three options that you've given here, I've only used traditional laptops and a netbook a couple of times. I didn't like the netbook at all because of the fact that the screen was so tiny, but I do own two different laptops and really do enjoy using them whenever we are away from home.

When it comes to repair and upgrade, well, with laptops it can get costly and with tablets - choice can be very limited (if at all possible) and expensive. In certain cases its easier and cheaper to buy a new one. With a desktop, most people can figure out what went wrong an replace the part by just applying DIY screwdriver skills. Upgrading is almost as easily done and fairly inexpensive. When it need, you pop the unit down to the repair shop at the corner and they will do it. When it comes to portability and trendiness, of course - laptops and tablet win hands down.

I think it depends. Some people just want a little, portable connection to the internet without the phone stuff and so they just need a netbook. My other roommate (not the blind one) is totally non-tech savvy, and a netbook would be about what she could handle. The blind one can't use any of those smaller things because she can't see the screen if it is too far away or too small. And the way the tablets are made, she can't see them at all. I like my desktop, but would like a laptop so if I want to write on the go I could. Oh well...

Well, everybody's needs are different. Of course there are people out there who buy things just to buy things. That doesn't stop at computers or technology related items alone. I've seen people with over 500 pairs of shoes, a lot of them bought with in 2 years. I've seen people with 12+ pets, 5 dogs 3 cats & few birds. I've seen some rich people with 8 cars, and there's only 3 people in the family. Most of the times they don't even drive, instead they are driven around by limo. My point here is, there will always be a group of people who will buy stuff just to have them. That's not to say there aren't anybody who buy them based on their needs, or they're, as you put it, techno-idiots. I travel for work time to time. I do translation work as part time. Company I work for gets a lot of jobs from embassy. They hire a lot of part timers & free lancers. Once my co-worker called me & told me about a job they just posted (on employee's communication section of their website). Since he didn't speak the language I did, he thought I might be interested. I didn't have my laptop at the time because I don't make it a habit to carry my laptop with me when I'm not working. Friend I was having lunch with had his ipad in his car. I was able to borrow his ipad & link to restaurant's free wifi & was able to put a bid for that job. I ended up getting it & I was able to make $1,200 in commission for translating 9 exchange students school transcript. When I travel for work, of course I bring my laptop with me. But portability isn't just being able to take it from one place to another. It's about being able to use it on the run. I used to have blackberry for that very reason. Now my position has changed slightly, I don't have it anymore. And by giving up blackberry, I was able to cut my cell phone bill by $15/month. It may not seem much but why pay for something no matter how much it is if you're not going to use it. I'd rather buy a simple tablet that can link to wifi spots, which there are plenty of them around where I live. Better than lugging around my laptop like a school bag & trying to boot it up every time I wanna send out a simple email. I was able to respond to 15 emails & check for my work status all with in 20 minutes right in front of starbucks, & I didn't have to get out of my car. I don't know. I'm just saying, different things have their purpose. And there are people who need them despite of what others do. Just my thought

That's good advice. I Think it is very important to do your research and know what you need and whats available. So many people go out an buy something that is just off the production line and the very latest. They pay big money for something that if they waited and let the manufacturer get the bugs out of the product the cost would come down consiserably and the product would be much better as well. No, they have to have it now.

I have to agree with you. I started with a laptop and when it started to act up, the netbooks had recently came out and I thought they where so neat...I think the "mini" stuff is just so cool and fun to have. I have been using the same netbook for about 2 years now, but I have had to "wipe the system" twice and it still gives me a couple issues. The main thing that I have gotten frustrated with it is it doesn't have a lot of disk space and I take a lot of pictures of the kids and dogs and stuff and I can't load them on the computer to share anymore since there isn't anymore disk space on it. Once we have the extra money, we will actually be getting a desktop instead of laptop...but then again, we might get a full-size laptop, not yet decided yet. But I will have to say that if someone is in the market for a computer, I would say a full-size laptop is best. It's also better for viewing websites and such.

Think before buying these expensive gagdets. - Laptops is better with full funtionality and power of processing.
Ya, laptops , netbooks and tablets are different in functionality and best suit for different tasks in different situation. 3 items offer moveability and light weight however, their functionality suffer , the most powerful and full function is the laptops, and the lightest is the small tablet. However, only the laptops can play DVD and cd, while the netbook and tablets does not have the player but can use flash cards, usb thumbs and such.So think clearly what u want to use first before buying these expensive gagdets.

I agree with you, laptops are probably more worth the money they cost than netbooks or tablets. And you can bring them with you when you travel, so they're quite handy as well. Of course, they're not as handy as netbooks or tablets, but they're small enough to fit inside a hand luggage. I'm afraid many people buy tablets just because they're trendy, and not because they really them... many of my friends come to school with iPads and similar products just to show them off. I think it's quite stupid. But I have to say that tablets have a special feature that makes them unique: their touchscreen is probably the easiest form of interaction between man and machine, so that everyday operations are faster and easier to perform. I've seen a tablet in action and that's the only thing that actually impressed me.

When I was in the market for new, portable technology, I thought about the various options, and I bought a laptop because it seemed to fit my needs the best. It is a little larger than I would have liked but it is more powerful than my old one, and lighter weight as well. I felt that the netbooks and tablets did not have the capabilities I was thinking I needed.

I don't have a Laptop but I want one. I want a Laptop for my online job. I do have a netbook but I hate it! It was my father who bought it for me. That was such a waste of money because it has limited features.
