Still wondering !
My school , or even more broader , school in India are still in caves . They still force us to use the method invented by John Napier 4 centuries ago - Logarithm for complex calculations - which is total nonsense . I don't know why they have literally put a ban on use of calculators in schools and more importantly EXAMS . One should not waste time in just calculating something while you got much more things to do in the exact 3 hours in exams . Though the log method is fast , it still takes about 3-4 mins. to finish the calculations and arrive at the final answer whereas by using a calculator , you could do that in 10 seconds , thus saving precious time . Don't know why educational institutions resort to the old traditional methods when you are practically going to use calculators once you are out to a job .
But is there a place where you are allowed to use calculators in schools and exams ? Do you do that ? Help to spread a word . Just spare a minute or two to express your views

well on board exams we are not allowed to use scientific calculators so its a hassle too. But using nothing completely is a different matter.

We have spell checkers, but we have also to learn orthography ; we have photocopiers and printers, but we learn to write and draw... Learning how to use a log table is not a nonsense in my opinion. Only a few simple calculators are authorized for exams in my country, and you would certainly not use them effectively at job.
