I really love to shop. Buying new clothes, shoes, bags and the likes. At the same time, I'm trying to save money. The more money I save, the more I have the tendency to splurge on shopping. Have you ever experience these? What do you think should be done?

i can totally relate with what you are saying.. i, myself, have been struggling to save money because i tend to buy a lot of things, even those that i don't need.. but then i realized that it is really not a good thing that is why i have been trying to control my impulses in buying.. whenever i get my allowance, i immediately put aside a particular amount to serve as my savings.. i then spend just from what's left from my money.. it is tough, but i really have to be disciplined when it comes to money.. :)

Oh my gosh, I feel totally the same. I also can't control myself from overspending. Every time I get enough money, I can't stop myself from buying all the things I want. I always splurge on things that I end up regretting after. It's really frustrating sometimes.

For me yes but for this time you need to apply the discipline to your self and ask do I really need it or I want it?.

=) Maybe when I was buying the item, I was convincing myself that I NEEDED it even though it's just my shopaholic self telling me so. =)

I also had the same dilemma a couple of years ago. Whenever I see my saving account grow I always have the temptation to buy things that I really don't need. After realizing my mistake I decided to invest my savings instead of placing it on a bank which is easily accessible to me. My first investment was an insurance policy which is also partly a mutual fund. This year I am planning on investing more on trust funds and mutual funds so that I won't be tempted to use my savings in other things.

I actually havent tried investing but I'll think about it cause like you, when I know that I've already saved money, I have easy access to it making it more tempting for me to buy new stuff. Thanx for your advise.

yes! i can be tight with my budget but when i'm stressed out, i find myself looking for something to buy. i only spend when there's an occasion or a reason to celebrate. to stop myself from spending, i hang out with friends. i forget every worry and every problem when i'm with them.

Hey, I understand your pain. I really love to buy little things for myself, but I find that once I start shopping a little bit, I seem to buy a lot more things than I intended to originally. I think what you should do is set aside a separate fund for your money. You save money, but instead of saving it all, set aside ten percent or so to another fund where you can spend it on the stuff you want. I do that with my earnings, and it really has helped me keep my spending under control. Hope I helped in some way.

I used to enjoy shopping years ago but that's when I had a job making a lot more money. Losing income is a sure fire way to put a stop to that. I realized that it's just stuff, worthless stuff. Do you really need all that? Try not buying anything for a month put that money you would have spend in the bank. Try to make purchases bases on if it's just a want or a necessity. Do you have money saved up for a rainy day? If your car breaks down or you lose your job how is your stuff going to get you through it? Can you use your shoes and bags pay your rent?

Well spending and saving at times doenst co relate to each other if you have to willingness to save then you should make your mind in some way that your saved money is really important to you and you can use them for your future need or any other necessary things, but compared to spending think that the money is going out remember it takes hard to earn but easy to spend. Just think about this fact and renew your mind this will help you in saving.

I have indeed experienced this before! It takes a while to get used to but I just stopped allowing myself to carry my debit card. I only carry cash and omly when I need my debit card I take it with me. What always helped me was to think of how glad I would be if I managed to save up the desired amount. I am now a money saver rather than a money spender.

You need to set a budget for yourself and your shopping. That way you can still shop, so you won't feel like you are missing out, but you make sure you don't spend more than you can afford. This is a very common problem I think, and in my experience, budgeting is the only thing that really works!

I also love to shop but I don't splurge on everything. I like to buy brand name brands so I go to Macy's, they have clearance/sale sections & I always find nice stuff then I'd have coupons on top of that and in the end I'd save a lot of money. I would say... try to use coupons & look for sale items :)

i have a high EQ when it comes to shopping. i can limit myself to buying only the essentials when i don't have that much money. i don't that part in your post that the more you try to save money, the bigger is your tendency to splurge? how do you tryto save up? do you keep it at home or put your savings in the bank? i guess the best way for you to be able to save up is to keep a separate account for your savings. make also the access to it a little harder. either you keep your debit and credit cards always at home and do not bring too much money when you go out. the tendency is if you have the money and if you see something nice, you will right away buy it coz you are capable of doing so. if you don't have the access to pay these things, no matter how much you buy thrm, you simply won't because you can't.

I do have easy access to the money that I try to save up, maybe that's one factor that makes it hard for me to control my spending. I'm going to try doing this. Thank you!

Are you saving money for a particular reason? If you are try having a picture of that (or something that reminds you of it) in your bag so whenever you go out tempted to buy something and get out your purse, you'll see it and remember why you don't want to spend. Or just really try and picture it whenever you're go out. I love to spend as well, but make sure you have a clear picture of why you want to save, it'll make it a lot easier. If there's no specific event, you just want to make sure you have enough for a rainy day really try and remind yourself that you need the money, not think "ah well there's nothing in particular I'm saving for so why not one more bag/dress/pair of shoes etc".

Yes, I do have a particular reason for saving money but it's just that I can be tempted at times.. =) I'll keep this in mind. I don't want to wake up one day when I really do need money but had nothing saved at all. Thank you

I know the feeling I am trying to save too but the prices on all the things we seem to need have sky rocketed and it is so hard to get ahead!! I have been going to 99 cent stores, garage sales discount stores, and anything I can find on sale but it seems it is hard to do anymore. Maybe if you are employed you can take like $45.00 to $60.00 each paycheck and hide it, that is what one of my employees told me to do when I was working but due to high gas prices and one car I am working and looking for as much as I can do at home.

Well, as long as what you are spending for your shopping is your savings, then there's really no problem doing so. But if it is through credit cards and buying wantonly until you have consumed your whole credit limit, then you are up for a big problem, when the bill comes and you don't have the capacity to pay it in full. Paying it lite, will earn you lots of interest, that will have you paying it more than the principal. It's really okay to shop , as long as you have the money for it.
