I am from India. We have several religions in our country making it real secular country. In Hindu religion they say they have 33 crore Gods! So Hindus worship 33 crore Gods some or other time in their life time! But one may be surprised to know that in India animals are not only respected and they are worshipped.
Cow is considered as a Holy animal and it is presumed that all the Hindu god stay in her body at various parts! Thus for Hindus Cow is equivalent to God and they worship this animal on daily basis. similarly bullocks are also worshipped during the festival of Pola!
Cobra snake is called as Nag and is worshipped during the festival called Nag Panchami all over the India.
Dogs are considered as the Avtar of 'Gauri' wife of Lord Shankar is worshipped in the states from southern part of India,
Rat is considered to be the vehicle of Lord Ganesha and is worshipped herein India. We have a full fledged temple for rats in India where the rats are worshipped and offred food on daily basis and devotees visit the temple without any fear!
Owl is considered as a good omen and worshipped as the vehicle of Goddess Laxmi, a Goddess of money!
Hindus never can think of killing a cat as they have a notion that to compensate that they require to immerse a statue made up of gold in the Ganges river! This shows how sacred is the cat for Hindus.
The monkey is considered as the form of Lord Hanuman and they are worshipped and offered food by people in India all over the country!
Thus if I go on writing about such things there would be a big discussion, which would be beyond the scope of this forum to publish so, in nut shell I would say that in India people worship the animals and pay lot of respect to them! All want to know from the members that is there any other country where the animals are worshipped like in India? Your comment about this issue please! Your response will be highly appreciated! Thanks !

Can you explain to me why a lot of the world's leather now comes from India? Is it true that some regions kill cows, it all depends on which part?

I don't know how all these animals came to be worshipped. But I did hear a story about the cows. It seems that there was a terrible famine in a part of India many years ago and the people were so desperate they were killing the cows to eat. Well the King knew that if he didn't stop this there would be no milk and no baby cows to provide for the future. So he delcared the cow holy and forbid any more slaughter. When I heard this story it made purfect sense to me and also helped me realize that today's actions have far reaching implications so be very careful what you choose to do.

Hi Dear Savypat! May be you are right! In fact before coming to the point I would like to give brief history of India which is having relevance to the topic under discussion! In fact Ancient India was ruled by Dravidian and Aryans have invaded the India from the Northern part of the country and they have conquered maximum part of the India leaving southern part of India to the Dravidians which are now known as Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The remaining all the preset states were taken over by the aryans then. Thus these states are having high influence of the Aryans!
Aryans when invaded India they carried cattle along with their own culture and civilization to India and the cattle was their main asset and the cattle rearing was their main occupation! They knew that it is the cattle which would make them prosperous and that is why they were very particular about saving the stock.
And in India depending upon the religion and also upon the caste systems some people are pure vegetarians and for them milk and milk products are only the source of animal proteins and fats, So in absence of Cows then these people's life would have been at stake!
So I feel taking this fact into consideration, under the pretext of the God, the Cow must have made as a sacred animal and must have nominated as a 'Holy Cow' so that she won't be killed and had as a food, in order to propagate the Cattle population!
Though I have not come across any such story narrated by you, there are every possibility that this can be true, as the ultimate motto was to save the cattle population! Otherwise what is the difference in eating a flesh of goat/sheep and Cow when both are herbivores, and eat the similar type of food for their survival?!
Thanks for responding! I sincerely appreciate your response!
