Do teachers talk amongst themselves about students?

I always wonder if teachers talk about students behind their back. If so, I wonder if it's strictly about studies or if it's also a social thing, like not liking a student for their own reasons. I think about this because students seem to develop reputations at small schools, even universities. I think teachers are guilty of believing what their coworkers say, and I they should stop and think for themselves.

I worked in a school on a temporary basis and remember clearly when the teachers use to go into the teachers lounge and discuss with each other their students behavior. Of course I kept to my self and wondered why did this because it made the other teachers get a bad impression of students prior to even having them in class. I also remember a teacher oh you yes I know you to a student which in my opinion is wrong.

I knew that the teacher's discussed their student's behavior with the other teacher's! That is wrong and very unethical as a teacher. Some teachers, just can't be trusted for the life of them!

Oh I would bet money teachers do talk amongst themselves about students. I would think the extremes would be the most popular topics. The most talked about would be those who excel and those who are problem students. Teachers who are fair will judge for themselves instead of taking anothers word for any info. Of course any rumors will give a heads up and hopefully the teacher can be impartial in evaluating.

yes, there should be a rule that they don't talk about students, no? I think it's unfair that they would let their gossip affect their judgments.

I don't think there can be or even should be a rule for teachers not to talk about students. Many teachers will be fair and NOT let gossip affect them. Teachers are there to help all students, even those that are hard to handle. By discussing with each other they can give suggestions to each other on how to help them.

Of course they do, but they don't really talk about ALL the students. The discussed are the trouble makers (because of absences or behaviour) or the most elite in studies ones - that can go to contests to represent the school.

I would feel bad for students who have a bad reputation just because they don't go to class. If they do their work, I would think they shouldn't be judged.

I'm sure that teachers talk to their colleagues about their students. If they are feeling especially proud of a student or are feeling a needful concern, it is just a natural reaction to bring thpse conversations out in the open. it doesn't mean that teachers gossip about students. Crossing the line between the student relatiosnhip and the one of the teacher can be awkward if they do not show respect to each other.

yeah, if they talk about students there's nothing wrong, but if they act just like high school kids by gossiping then I have something to say about it.

Oh, I am sure they do..People just love to gossip, even teachers. But I am not really sure what they talk about though,I hope it's nothing personal , they talk about behavior too.

I would hope not either. The school atmosphere should be professional and courteous if it wants to produce such students.

Of course, teachers do talk among themselves. They are also social creatures, like any human being. I would imagine them being bored if they talk endlessly about the school stuff like admin stuff (like memos, curriculum or policies), stuff about their work requirements (loads) or their banter about their private lives - anything that can be considered trite and boring. Gossip is one thing that cannot be avoided in the workplace, even in the teacher's lounge. More often than not, teachers are most likely talk about their personal lives or their students. The lounge is kinda like their confessional, where other teachers have the same kind of concerns over students or the students themselves are the concern. You have to understand that a teacher in different surroundings or audience. Most likely, a teacher is a different person when in front of a class and when talking to a colleague. On teacher talking about students behind their backs, some people might think it as a natural move - a fellow teacher would mostly understand another teacher's predicament or opinion regarding a particular student. However, in my personal opinion, the practice is not insulting, unless the student's character is being attacked without a very good reason. Besides, some students do not like their own teachers for some reasons. I would guess the same goes to with teachers disliking their students. Majority of the teachers I encountered are very diplomatic when it comes to their dislike or whatever term fits the adjective. Of course, teachers are the epitome of professionals (my personal opinion). All of them are educated people and I think that what a particular teacher might say about a certain student (whether good or bad) is always up for debate. I don't think teacher pass judgment too quickly on students just because it came from another teacher's mouth.

I think it depends on the school - some schools don't have good professors. Some professors, at least the ones I've had, do not seem professional at all. They inflate their egos all the time, talking about their life for most of the class. I am worried for the private school system which can easily show unfair treatment to students based on non-academic matters. There are some classes where students are graded based on "group discussion performance" rather than exams, or other types of subjective grading methods. This can be subject to personal biases, so the system is lacking.

Hi. sashakiddo. I have never heard them do so, but I would not be surprised if they did so. Teachers are not supposed to talk about their students to coworkers at all. When they get in their teaching lounges or when they go home, there is no telling what is actually taking place. Whatever is wrong at school, the teacher should only discuss this with the child's parent at not with coworkers.

Although I haven't personally seen any do it, I wouldn't be surprised if teachers did do this sort of thing. After all, they are only human. I would imagine that they might do this privately from time to time.

Yes, I do believe teachers are talking about their students as soon as they flocked inside the faculty room. I bet they are complaining and criticizing some student they don't like or students who don't make good in their class. Yes, teachers should be reminded that they are the role model in school. Some innocent students look up to them, Hence they should watch their mouth and actions always.

Yes, they definitely talk about their students specially on the behavior. Sometimes they even ask for advice on how to deal with such behavior. I had a classmate way back in high school that seem to be a problem student. Teachers noticed him too and they decided to bring him to the guidance councilor and ask the presence of his parents to talk about why is he behaving like that.

Did it work? If they are talking about behavior it's one thing. But that should have no effect on a person's grade.

I guess so because in my child's school, teachers talk about their students much. I guess they should meet the parents instead of them discussing it by themselves if they have problem with the student ever.

Yes, but most of the times, it's negative stuff. It's almost like how students talk about games, homework, it's all related to what they do. But that's a bad thing for them b/c it will cause certain biased opinions.

Young students don't know better, and college students, well they're paying for their education.. most of the time. I think they have a right to complain. It's the teachers who are grading, so they should show honorable judgement rather than bias.

I agree, teachers being human beings obviously have their own opinions on individuals and I don't believe they are always completely professional about it and keep it to themselves. I've even heard of situations where a teacher was caught trash talking a student to a co-worker and was fired for it. People will be people though, and if you earn a bad reputation you will definitely be talked about by someone.

Rightfully fired, i don't think students have enough rights these days. They are treated like prisoners and children. Students should be respected just as teachers.
