Do you listen to music that other people don't seem to understand?

Maybe there are times when you love a band so much but none of your friends seem to like them. Or maybe you like a song so much you listen to it over and over and everyone else just thinks it's a regular old song.
This happens to me a lot.. one song that I love is by Jane's Addiction called Jane Says. I love a lot of songs by Jane's Addiction, but my friends don't listen to them and think they're weird.
Another song is one that is completely different, a jazz song called In a Sentimental Mood by John Coltrane. I use to listen to that over and over again.
I'm sure you have had a love for songs no one else understood the way you did. Please share them.

Yes. I listen to a lot of music like that. Some people don't like me because of some of the music I listen to. It really sounds ridiculous, but it's true. I think it's kinda funny.
Some bands I like that some people don't understand or really know much about are: Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid, Kungfu Vampire, Dr. Steel, Conspirituality, and The Spaceape. I've gotten a lot of blank stares and weird looks and comments about these ones.
A lot of people haven't heard of a lot of stuff I listen to. With some of the bands I listen to they've never even heard, but they've heard of it and so they hate it and hate anyone who listens to it. I'm talking about horrorcore or "Juggalo music". Some people think Juggalos are a gang; those people don't know anything.
They say that the lyrics are too violent and we dress weird, but they never pay attention to what the songs are actually talking about and so they totally miss the peaceful message underneath. Their loss.
Namaste.

I liked one song by ICP, haven't heard the others. I didn't know it was called horrorcore or juggalo.. I guess the video of people getting knocked out doesn't really help give them a good name, but it's all in the theatrics. it worked for lady gaga so it should work for anyone.

I could relate to your situation very well. Since I was a kid, I've always like listening to Japanese songs. I listened a lot to opening and ending themes from Japanese anime and live action shows. At the age of 11, I began liking a particular Japanese pop group (I'm still a fan until now). I was the only one in class who was so crazy about Japanese songs. I don't even understand the language but I love the music. Some of my classmates may have thought I was weird. I even sang in front of the class once and I know some of them think of me as different but I didn't care. I'm loving my thing so anyone who has a problem with it can go leave me alone, lol

Teehee, yup. I have an inner self that wants to perform on stage It was during one class. Our teacher's style in teaching was games while interjecting concepts and lessons. Those who lost in that game would do something/perform anything in front of the class. I didn't know anything else to do so I just sang my heart out, lol Since most of us grew up watching anime, I just let them choose the anime show and I sang the theme.

that's a weird game, performing isn't a punishment, it's a reward. at least it seems to be for you. i would hate performing because i have stage fright.

Wow, lots of people here seem to like Japanese pop. I never heard it when I was young so it never grew on me. And you sang in class? That's very daring.

hi sadhakiddo oh I love In a Sentimental Mood and John Coltrane great song. Most people think I am completely off my rocker as I am mostly into classical music and I mean real classics like Mozart Beethoven and Bach but mostly Mozart and his violin sonatas. I also love jazz and the Beatles and U2 but love Mozart first.go figure .we are all so different when it comes to music. One of my favorite songs is a presley classic I CAnt Help falling in Love with you.

Mozart is cool :) I can't really remember his songs even though I had to play some in orchestra. I think it's cool that people can name the sonatas when they go by numbers. I don't think I could keep track.

thats a good idea. sometimes I start to like a song i dont understand, then I realize it is saying something I would never want to stand for, like racism or some cult-like worship of god.

Yea! everybody's taste are different. I do listen to metal stuff, which is majority of the people doesn't understand.. they even tell me "Are you a satanist?" something like that. hahah!! I do listen to Asian Pop/Rock, which I don't literally understand and so as them. :)
But no matter what they call me, tell me, say to me, I don't care. I enjoy listening to this kind of stuff. Hahahaha! :)

I don't care either. If I like a song I'm going to listen to it even if everyone else hates it. I can't stand when people don't have their own taste in music, just listening to what everyone else listens too. How sad is that!

"Jane Says," eh? That song frequents quite a few of my mixed CDs. It's one of the only songs my husband and I have an inside joke about. One of the first few times I heard it, I attempted to sing the lyrics without knowing them, and at the part where he says, "Treats me like a ragdoll!" I sang really loudly, "Treats me like a rainCOAT!" It made no sense, but that's what it sounded like to me at the time. To this day I sing the wrong lyrics just for old time's sake.
My husband really introduced me to emo music when I met him. It wasn't popular at all at the time, and my generation was the pop/rap generation, with the emo kids coming after us, so all my friends and family were weirded out by my sudden love of emo. It's also known to be very emotional, and at times, extremely whiny. But I love when men sing about emotion, because it's a clash of two things (men and emotion) that society says is wrong together and shouldn't happen. At that, emo music has its large share of haters. I even saw a YouTube comment once that said, "Anybody who listens to emo just needs to kill themselves and make the world a better place." Seriously?
Some bands I adore out of the emo genre would be Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Brand New, My Chemical Romance, and Fall Out Boy. Taking Back Sunday was the first band that I identified with so much that I bought their CD. I'd never loved an artist as much as them. I can now proudly say that I know and can sing, word for word, every song on their first three CDs. They've got two singers, too, so my husband and I each pick parts and have our own little band in our car.

Its funny how musicians don't really attempt to sing their words clearly, almost like they want people to hear it wrong.
Everyone at my high school liked Fall Out Boy, wore their shirts and went to all the concerts. I never really got into it but they do sound catchy.

All the time. I enjoy a wide variety of music. But it seems like every time I go to put money in the jukebox at the local bar the other patrons all try to steer me clear of it lol. One of my personal favorites is Gogol Bordello. That one seems to drive alot of people nuts. I also enjoy alot of harder stuff that other patrons don't like.

Ohh they are so fun! I first heard them in the movie, Everything Is Illuminated.. I think that's the one. I guess that's how many Americans heard of them? they are definitely hard on the ears. My favorite hard stuff comes from the Pixies, they are one of my favorite all time bands. And my friends can't stand it when I listen to them.

everyone has his taste, but don't impose your mind on others, although he is your friend.
Go ahead to enjoy your music and seperate it with your friendship, because you are the same person but maybe not because of music .

I learned not to try to make people listen to my favorite music because not many people are open to other styles. Sometimes you will find the few people who will try to listen to everything just to see if they like it. This is how I am, or at least how I use to be. This is how I now have so many tastes in music. I can't believe some people will stick to that one genre for their whole lives.. it puts a limit to one's mind.

Yesss! Each individual have their own likes and dislikes! Just like you, I am into different type of music and it is mostly due to my mood. There are these people who love this band I love and others don't,. Then another group of friends of mine will like this second artist I love and the first group I mentioned hated it. So I am into random usually :) Just not really into songs I don't seem to understand the meaning. Except anime songs because they stick to my ears!

Don't think you are weird because of that, or because your friends say that. There are many, many people like you in every place, i include myself in those people. I like Some bands that people say is just noise or crazy songs, but sometimes we just can't control the tings we like. It just happen.

For me, it's not so much a particular Band, or song that I like but none of my friends do, it's a genre of music itself. Many of my friends are into Country music, and my hubby and best friend are both into Rock music.
However, I LOVE Techno/Trance music, and listen to it all the time. Both my hubby and my best friend get on at me when I do saying that it's not 'real' music, but just because it's not made with 'instruments' doesn't mean it's not music. I hate the music that they listen to, but I keep my mouth shut. We're all different people and we all have different tastes.

my boyfriend loves techno as well, and for a while I teased him for it because he's so into that scene, the light shows and all. After a while though, I started liking some of it. It's definitely music because it has a beat to it. I would say Country is less like music than anything because it's boring and not very creative! It just doesn't move the emotions and the musical mind as much as other genres do. But that's just my opinion..

Yes! I certainly do. I listen to Christian music, which most people find unappealing and way too boring. What most people don't know is that Christian bands and their music are really cool. More than entertaining, they are uplifting and inspiring.

I do, especially my favourite Coeur de Pirate. Sometimes people don't seem to understand her poetically, but more frequently they just don't speak French. Another of my favourites, Voltaire, seems to lose a lot of his poetic references and fancy wordplay on my friends as well. Of course, I don't really seem to get their music either.

When I was a child I was heavily into The Beatles, which does not sound strange, but it was the 1980's and all my friends thought that was a bit weird as The Beatles were old peoples music! The type that their parents listened to, but not us kids!
I have always disliked mainstream music that most people seem to like. I tend to prefer music a little more obscure or older than most my age. Right now I am liking this band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qn27GOAkwo) but, my wife and kids think they are weird!

I have spent my whole life listening to music that nobody understood. Sometimes, even I didn't understand it! For example, I was addicted to "Velvet Underground". I loved so much of their music, but why? What a load of crap!
It really is strange how we develop such odd tastes for music. But that's what makes us all different as human beings.

I always have something like that. I recently discovered my love for a Pink Floyd song called One Slip. I love it but nobody else really thinks it's that nifty. Growing up in the 90's I loved listening to Duran Duran. Everyone thought that was silly since they were an 80's band. You know what though? I like being different. I've never been one to go with the crowd, but I always have a ton of friends:)

I love Pink Floyd but I never heard of that song. I will definitely check it out. My favorite from them is the Wish You Were Here album.
I think growing up in the 90s, the music sucked!!! That's why we had to listen to the oldies. I mean there were great bands in the 90s like Nirvana, but they were dominated by the popular junk boy bands. So there weren't really good options compared to the 80s, 70s and 60s.
Did you hear last year's album from Duran Duran? They sound good still. I never listened to them much but I like their new album.

yeah i did.
the funny this is korean songs because i just found it melodrama and kind of funny whenever i watch korean movies or series.
it really happens that some people doesn't seem to understand because maybe they have their own likes and not the same with yours but if you give them time to listen maybe they will like it. it really depends on the perception of a person =)

Yes, my friend tried to make me listen to korean songs, and I thought why should I listen to it if i don't understand the words? Some people appreciate music from different languages.. My friend learned all the words to a Japanese song even though she can't speak Japanese.. so some people are more open to cultural differences in music.

yes, what you experienced is almost the same as what I experienced.
only difference in the flow of the music. you like jazz and I love rap song.
in my country, almost all youngsters like pop music or music Melayu. so when they listen to music that I heard, they were denounced by saying "this singer was singing or was babbling?"
I do not respond to their taunts, for me rap is my music, so what right do have they bothering me?

I listen to some stuff that people don't understand. I listen to a little bit of Enya, which for a guy who is 19 years old might sound a little weird. Especially because the majority of the music I listen to is rap music. It is very soothing and I really enjoy Enya when I'm trying to relax.
