I shouldn't be surprised, not one bit.

Some of you remember the issues we face with our roommate. Things are getting worse now that it's getting warmer and he knows that he has to move out. He had told us that he hadn't showered in months, claimed to have only washed the parts that absolutely needed it. But I don't see how when nothing in the bathroom has ever moved. We have dropped several subtle hints his way, trying to get him to take a shower, but nothing ever worked. Last week we started spraying air freshener by and even in his room when he wasn't around. Not only is the smoking getting worse, but he's really starting to stink the place up. The subtle hint with the air freshener didn't work, so I put a fabric softener sheet in the window the other day when it was open in order to make it smell better in here. That still didn't work. Last night, we put a couple of sheets into the air vent, since the heat is still on, that helps make the living room smell better. When he came home from work last night, I could smell his stench so bad it almost made me sick. I pulled out a towel, handed it to him, and said, "please, please, please, take a shower!". His response? "Ok, ok, ok!". I found his towel on the kitchen counter after that. He made his stupid tea and ran to his room to make all his annoying noises. A few hours later, the towel was on the floor outside his door after it had been hung on the doorknob. This morning, I get up to find that the shower hadn't been used and the towel was still on the floor outside his door. So did he take the blunt and to the point hint? Nope. My boss suggested spraying him with air freshener to maybe get the hint across to him, but I think that would piss him off further. We're helpless, and I'm at wits end about this. He's here for another month and it's going to kill me if he doesn't shower for that entire time. I would love to kick him out sooner, but we need him to pay his share of the rent and bills before we can do that. He also owes us $1k, and I'm waiting for him to pay that to us as well, so you see the dilemma that I face in waiting to kick him out. We will have to air his room out when he leaves, wash down everything in there, it is just so horrible. He's made such a mess in 5 months, he's just that much of a slob. When he works, he complains about it, and doesn't want to keep going to work. He'd rather stay home all day and do something disgusting, which I know he's doing based on the noises coming out of his room. He is a sick old man, and I really can't wait until he's gone.

hi kris if he is elderly do you realize he may be senile and i would find out who his family is and see if they can intervene as its sick not to take showers. I also would try to find a way to make up financially for his part of the rent and kick him out.barring that as an elderly man maybe you could take this to the board of health and tell them this mane is a stinking menace and is making your home unlivable.they might be able to do something about him. I would find his family and find out if this man is mentally off as maybe it would really b e safer if he was out now. Maybe the man really is nuts an so it might be he needs o be u nder obserevation. I would surely kick him out if it were me.

From what you have said here about this man, I think when he leaves you won't get back the 1K he owes you. Sounds to me like he will pack up and run. I just don't understand anyone who won't take a shower. Do they not realize how bad they smell? Aside from that, it's just plain bad manners, especially living in someone else's house. If he lived on his own, in his own place, he's entitled to do whatever he wants, but when he lives with someone else, he really need to respect their boundaries too. I agree with a previous poster about using activated charcoal. That stuff is GREAT for absorbing odours! The only thing I can suggest is to try and sit tight until he moves out, and then completely air out his room and clean it down properly. I wish you luck in him finding somewhere else to live.

You can vent here, and that is about it for now, since you need the money. One thing that will help with the smell, which will probably linger long after you clean and air the place is to make "sachets" of activated charcoal. Otherwise known as aquarium filter charcoal. Hubby bought a car and we could not get the smoke scent out. Believe me, we tried everything, including washing down with vinegar and baking soda in the rug. We bought a jar of activated charcoal at Wal Mart and then took old unmatched socks and filled them with it. Put those in the car and it finally did the trick. It absorbs the odors. I do not know if you could just put a tray of barbecue charcoal in the room and have some success. It will be better when you can turn off the heat and open the windows. Maybe you should just "accidentally" hose him down when he walks past, outside.
