In the last days...

I was thinking about all the discussions on the probability of these days being the 'end of the world' and the thought occured to me that the focus is always on physical events happening such as earthquakes and tsunamis. What should concern us more is the social events taking place. Here's a Bible passage that warns of just that, and points to these things as another sign we are in the 'last days'. II Timothy 3: This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent (no self control), fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof; from such turn away. So, do you think we are seeing more of these character traits in society today than we did say...50 years or even 25 years ago? Have you found yourself asking 'what is wrong with people these days'?

Honestly? I think that all those characteristics are descriptive of man's natural self. We are born selfish and self-centered. The difference is to what extent our training and society controls and modifies those natural tendencies. They cannot be completely overcome without the intervention of God and His Holy Spirit, but any society must control them to an extent in order to survive. However, as another poster pointed out, these traits are no longer being frowned upon by society and no longer are we trained to exercise self-discipline. Rather, society now demands we accept the heady pursuit of pleasure by others and we must call it "good". Rules that would inhibit these behaviors are "discriminatory", "unsophisticated" - just archaic ideas from the uneducated. Society not only no longer honors God, it goes out of its way to dishonor God and all those of faith. How can such a society long stand? There are lots of physical signs. There are lots of signs in the attitudes of people. But more convincing is the need of society to call good, evil - and to label all evil as good.

I agree Rollo. People don't realize that there is a spiritual war going on all around them and without even knowing it, their spirits are affected. The phrase, if you are not for me, you are against me, comes to mind. Our nature IS sinful. We have the capacity to be 'mother Theresas' or 'Charlie Mansons'. It all depends on who we are serving. And by default, if we are not serving God, we are serving the enemy. I think of Bob Dylan's song, Gotta Serve Somebody. There is a great truth there, and Dylan's being a student of the Bible has revealed that to him. In these last days, the enemy is working overtime because he knows his days are numbered. And many people are inadvertantly serving his cause.

Matthew 24:8 ,in talking about earthquakes that will occur in the last days, says these are the beginning of birth pains. The emphasis in this context is not on natural disasters, but what will be going on as a result of false prophets and the love of many growing cold.

Yes, the earthquakes are described as the beginning of sorrows, or birth pangs. You are correct.

I agree with your reply above this one, that we don't know the hour, but He has given us signs so we can prepare. Unfortunately many Christians themselves are blind to what is happening around them..And I don't ask "what's wrong with people these days?" I know that time is running out and the enemy is getting scared and working overtime...

I think with the increase of the population of any species it is natural that the survival instincts will kick in and the quality of life will decrease. Those instincts that used to not be so prevail-ant come out way more. We are going to be more selfish and proud and try all methods of competing against others. Our instincts become more animalistic.

That could very well be the 'reason' for these things being more prevalent in todays society. But do you think that this could be an indication of 'the last days'?

Oh, I think He is pretty displeased about the sin, but I understand what you are saying. As in the days of Noah...life just goes on like nothing is happening. Until the day Noah went into the ark and the flood came the people around him went on with their lives. You have to know that those people all gathered around and asked Noah...what are you doing? why are you building this big ark? They were warned but didn't heed the warning. I do agree with you wholeheartedly about our status as a Christian nation. When our President actually says...we are no longer a Christian nation...its time to look up. And our acceptance of such things...we no longer become upset to see or hear such things. Even the conscience of the Christian is becoming 'seared' over. It no longer makes us ashamed or angry when we see the awful things being done.

Although i have never read that art about judgment Day- I only read Revelations(a bit)- about the animal with horns, disasters and darkness.. .Yes, I have found myself asking why people are so cruel these days, there are lots of opportunists, crimes happening around the world even done by youngsters.. But there are still good people out there..

Yes there are lady1993. Yes there are. Thanks for saying that, I am happy there are or this life would be unbearable. Many Christians feel and believe that the scriptures teach they (we) will be taken out of this world before it gets real evil, what will happen then to those who remain? When all the good and decent people are gone?

Gosh, I can't even imagine the world filled with bad people, that is just horrible.. Which art in the scripture said that the good ones would be taken? I think there should always be balance in the world, good and evil..

Truly no one knows when Jesus will come again and take His saints with Him. All we can do is be watchful not of what is happening nowadays but of ourselves. Are we prepared already? Jesus said in John 14:1 that when everything is ready, then he will come and get us so that we can be with Him always.

Thank you for your response. The recent 'prediction' of the rapture and its failing is an indication of the end times itself. Jesus said there would be false prophets who would deceive many. He also warned that there would be scoffers who say 'where is the promise of his coming', that things continue as they have through history.

Absolutely. Things were far better when I arrived in 1948. This isn't nostalgia talking, by the way, but solid memory. It wasn't perfect, no, but it was far, far better, then. We have room for but one language, the English language, & we have room for but one sole loyalty, & that is a loyalty to the American people. " ~ President Theodore Roosevelt

I arrived in 1956. It WAS better. I remember neighbors who would see you doing something wrong, even as slight as picking someone's flowers from the flower bed and they would come out and take you straight home to your mother to be punished. Those same neighbors would bake cookies the next day to pass amongst the kids in the neighborhood. Or invite you in to have a cool drink of lemonade and no one worried that they were going to do something awful to you. Preachers got down about sin and would call out names of those who frequented the bars on Saturday night before coming to church on Sunday. And people expected it and didn't whine about it or threaten to sue the preacher. I remember trying to check out a book at the library and being told it was not for a girl my age. I was ten and the book was 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. My mom went and got it for me, but she didn't argue with the librarian either. Told me that she meant well and to let it be. NO, it wasn't perfect. There were bad people and bad customs. But it was not overt and in your face or plastered all over the tv and movie screens. We started to work on the bad laws...civil rights and school desegregation. What went wrong?

Everything happens for a reason, Maybe it is a reminder to us that should go back to our creator who is Jesus Christ. We are now living in the last days, so it's time for us to repent from our sins.GOD Bless us all.

Thank you. I know that we cannot know the hour or the day, but the Bible (which I believe to be the Word of God) does give us some idea of the general time frame. I think that God wants us to be prepared, to know the signs so we can get our hearts in the right place and be ready. He also wants those who are NOT ready, the unbelievers...to have no excuse when they stand before Him. He is righteous in His judgment and that means He warns of impending judgment before acting, thats my opinion. What's your opinion?

Well the Bible talks of both social and physical turmoil as the sign of the last days. More often than not calamities and disasters have their origin in human actions. One of the clear signs of the last days is war and that comes from social turmoil.
