when the protagonist dies/fails

Most people prefer happy endings but many script writers tried to go against the norm and decided to make the protagonist die or maybe make the protagonist not reach his or her dreams. So instead of giving you a happy ending they will give you a sad and depressing ending. Do you find sad endings acceptable? What are the most memorable sad endings you had ever watched in your entire career as a movie watcher? Was there a time you preferred a story to have a sad ending but you get a happy ending instead?

I do tend to like the darker endings of movies. I think there are way too many happy endings and it is always a breath of fresh air when writers take a chance and most of the time it pays off. The Mist as you know is one of my favorite endings although the protagonist does not die, he might have well have. Buried is another one that I have just seen recently and to be honest Albert I was not expecting it to end that way, very tense movie, you should check it out. It has just one actor in it so be warned but don't let that put you off.

I love those sucker punch kind of endings. I would rather a movie have me go OMG what just happened rather than an ending that wraps everything up nicely and happy. I always find the shocking ending gets peoples talking more about it than a feel good ending. Most predictable endings don't have the same impact on me.

Lol,It's the ending that makes me scream I want my money back, it's just too depressing for my taste. It's really nice know that some people still enjoyed it, I enjoyed the movie for its visuals and action but not the story. It makes me feel depressed but as a bite of reality that is kind of relateable. You know there were times where we imagine things when everything is hopeless.

I already watch them is before, that guy from Smallville is in the movie. I think it's not about being a happy or sad ending, for me it's more about the satisfying and accomplished type ending. The ending of the movie sucker punch is a disappointment for me though.

I'd have to say that Stephen King's The Mist has one of the most twisted and sad endings that I've seen in recent years ... but any other ending and the movie would have seemed "cheesy". Another one that I can think of is "Of Mice and Men", that one also got to me and it's an ending that I've never forgotten, even though I haven't seen the movie for ... 15 years?

The funny thing with The Mist's ending is that I heard Stephen King liked it so much he actually stated he wished he had thought of that when he wrote the story.

The ending of the mist in the movie i think is that the girl is a reincarnation of someone those ghosts were looking for. she goes with them.

Sad endings are definitely acceptable as if every movie had a happy ending they would be dull, predictable and unrealistic. Yes it is a schock when you expect a happy ever after ending and get a sad one but it can make a movie more memorable. One of my favourites is in the movie "Nights in Rodanthe". It was the first movie I had watched which had been adapted from a Nicholas Sparks novel and as the movie unfolded it lead me to believe that there would be a romantic, happy ever after ending. But instead the ending I got felt like someone had ripped my beating heart out of my chest and it made the movie memorable.

The moment you said Nicholas Parks, I already get it, He is so fond of Sad endings, But his work Message in a bottle somehow have a happy ending but most of his works I had read are kinda tragic.

This started to happen a lot more with the rise of the anti-hero. Good examples were Bonnie and Clyde and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Although they were 'bad guys', the movies made them appear to been sympathetic. Tere was at one time an unwritten Hollywood code where the bad guys had to be held accountable by the end of the movie. Movies don't necesarily do that anymore, though I'm not sure when that change occurred. I think we all want to see the good guy come out in the end, even if the good guy is really a bad guy that's sympathetic.

I love anti-heroes because they were not cookie cutters, their characters is more real and relatable since each one of us have a darkside, no one is perfect as a breeze. what do you think about uber heroic characters dying in the end? its easier to see an anti-hero having a demise since its somehow gave them redemption as a character you know it makes them regret their wrong doings. I watched Bonnie and Clyde before, They were the evil couple who are in love.

Nope. I hate sad endings. There's times when I can take a somewhat bittersweet ending... where they met some of the goals and lost something in the process... but most of the time I prefer happy endings. I'm wired like most people, I don't like hearing stories about the people who were swept away by the odds... I like hearing stories about the people who beat them. Those are the kind of stories that are uplifting, and in a world where happy endings don't always happen... we kinda need uplifting.

Everyone likes to see their hero to be able to carry on. when your hero doesn't suceed it can shatter the image you have been proecting.

this may sound weird but you have a decoy, There is another person named sender with less post than you. Back to the topic some audience try to see the protagonist as their avatar in the movie so having the hero die is like them being the one to die.
