What's the real deal on Agave nectar?

It has been my understanding that agave nectar is a far better and healthier sweetener to use that regular sugar and so I have been using it (along with other things like honey and stevia) thinking I was doing a good thing. Well just the other day I read two different sources that say agave nectar is not good. One source said it is no better than sugar and the other said it is worse that HFCS!! I wanted to know if anyone can give some insight into this.

In my opinion it is better than processed sugars that most people eat, but it is far from being a completely healthy sweetener. I think it is suitable in moderation for people who want to transition away from the cane sugars into more natural sugars. I prefer to use raw honey, dates or stevia leaf as a sweetener along with the sweet flavours of other fruits in their natural state as a complete food.

I use stevia also and I have been using agave nectar more than honey (raw or otherwise) but I am starting to turn that around. I recently learned that local raw honey is very good for allergies, so that's another plus.

I used to use Agave more as I wanted to stay away from animal products, but I ended up going back to honey once we found a local bee keeper who was ethical and natural in obtaining his honey. I am not so fanatical about using animal products now, I just do what is better for the environment. The honey is local and the Agave is not. We still sell Agave though as some people want it.
