Websites are of two types, namely, Static Websites and Dynamic Websites. The difference between the two is that static websites don't use database like mysql to store data which on the other hand dynamic websites does. So, whenever, a web page of dynamic website is displayed, all data is pulled out from the database, and a static page is produced which is displayed to all users. The websites build using wordpress are dynamic websites. In short, by using wordpress your task of posting content on your site will become more easier. You can focus more on the content of your site rather than in coding. But, if you create a static website using HTML/PHP you need to have good knowledge of them which I guess you don't possess. So, better go for wordpress and yeah you can post your affiliate and referral links on your wordpress blog with paid hosting. But, still don't forget to read their TOS. Good luck with your site :)

Wordpress is a blog, which is a type of website. Basically, it's a posting system that does all the layout for you and lets you post entries in date order. It's more limited than a website because you can only post within the confines of what Wordpress allows you (in other words you can't do funky java stuff and so on, especially if you're hosted on Wordpress.com) A website (in the most basic form) is something you build yourself - you decide where everything goes and generate the HTML to put it on screen. You are only limited by your imagination. Your decision, at the most basic level, is whether you want total control over every aspect of your site and a lot more effort to put content online (a website) or a posting system that makes putting content up a lot easier but limits you slightly in the format (Wordpress or another blog). As for affiliate links and referrals, you'd need to check your host's terms and conditions. Wordpress (the company, not the blogging software) limits this, I believe (as does Blogger, though they have fewer strict rules if I remember correctly). Running the Wordpress software on your own web space (paid or free) would lift that limitation, assuming your web space ISP doesn't mind you posting those same links. For relative beginners, a posting system like Wordpress or Blogger (or MoveableType or some other blogging/posting app) is usually the best idea - you spend more time on your content and less on fighting HTML to get it to do what you want!
