I think there are benefits to LED and Plasma TVs - LEDs are in fact LCDs but are more efficient as they use LED backlighting rather than the environmentally unfriendly mercury. Plasma TVs have deeper blacks but LED tvs have gained ground in recent years. Here's an article that talks about the differences:

The concept & principles of working and the difference among the three technologies have been mentioned in the above post. HDTV stands for "High Definition Television" and has little to do with the technology behind. "HD" just means that the TV can display videos/images at resolutions from 1280 X 720 pixels (HD ready) to 1920 X 1080 pixels (Full HD).
About which to buy: Plasma is not preferred much anymore (because of the way LCD TV technology improved over time). Plasma is more radiation emitting (harmful) and have the issue of pixel burn out but have better contrast and angle of vision (But newer LCDs have pretty good contrast and viewing angle (as good & even better than plasma TVs)
LCD TV is cheaper than LED TV but the contrast (specially dark contrast) is very less compared to LCDs.
LED TV is the best of all, but the costlier than any other TV (the prices are expected to fall though.) Infinite contrast, least radiation emitting, least power consuming, If you have the budget, go for LED.
