Choose your own adventure

When I was young, I was fond of reading this adventure book where you get to choose which ending. When the situation arrives at a part where the characters have to make a decision, it will make you choose which decision the character will take. Something like, if the girl (a) jumps over the fence, go to page 10, (b) returns to camp, go to page 20 (c) waits for her friend, go to page 25 (c), etc. And so the book would have 5-7 kinds of endings. Have you come across this book? Did you enjoy it? What other books were you fond of reading when you were young?

I was an adult when those came out, but I have to say, I found them interesting. With out a doubt, tho, my favorite one was the one you could only solve by breaking the rules and looking at a page that you weren't ever directed to during the story! That's kind of what I might've written!

And I'm the kind who hears from her friends, break the rules and enjoy life a little! Though, there's one rule at work that I'm fond of breaking nowadays - showing up late for work, or not showing up at all!

Breaking the rules...that would be fun! Though I'll say I'd never get it because I'm one who doesn't break the rules.

I know those books. They're an awesome read because they make you feel like you're creating your own story. I usually came across those in second hand book sales and I usually buy them. Now, I have a ton of them. I like playing those multi-player versions of those books too. I would play for hours with my siblings. When I was younger, I read classic novels and fairy tails, most of which were read to me by my dad. It was nice.

Yes, those books are awesome! Yes, most of them are old books so they probably end up in the second-hand book shops. I haven't heard of the multi-player versions of the books. It's nice to hear that you grew up having a quality reading time with your dad.

The two person version is like... Dungeons & Dragons, I think. Without the board. Just two books, paper, pens and dice. They're fun, until the person you're playing with kills your character. XD It's like multi-player role playing game. It gets confusing since you keep returning to some places. And yes, quality reading time with parents are the best. Too bad we're too old for that now.

Oh, I see. Seems to have been fun playing those games! And got you bonding with your siblings! Yes, you may be too old for those things now, but those memories will be with you and will last your lifetime. That is why it is important for parents to be with their young kids, so that the kids will remember those when the parents get old.

I have never heard of a book like that but I love the idea. I know my children would love a book like that. Although there are things like that today in digital form such as games for Wii or XBox.

They're really fun books. Well, I've always been a book person in school, so I enjoyed them immensely. It's sad sometimes that old-fashioned books are now becoming passe because of technology. I do read a lot of e-books, but nothing beats the feeling of holding a book in your hands, pressing the pages, and especially for new books, smelling the pages (does that sound weird? I love the smell of new paper.

i have to agree that it is a shame that the technological world is taking over and books are not as popular as they once where these are fantastic books and i would highly recomend getting one

oh wow now this takes me back to my school days i used to read these kind of books from the school library where you could choose what happened next to the characters and the story line it was always so much fun and i would find myself reading the same book multiple times as there was always a differnt adventure to be had all in the same book. these are great books for the imagination im not sure if these kind of books are still available i would be interested to know as i think my daughter would enjoy reading them

Yes, they are really good books for the imagination. It's fun knowing that there could be several endings to a story. In fact, it can teach young people that whatever choices we make in life, there is a consequence to those choices. When I read them, I wanted to know if my first choice would be a good one.
28 Apr 11
i never looked at it in that way before but its a very good point it does show there are consequences to each choice you make

Well, of course, I didn't know it then. All I knew was that it was a lot of fun. The realization came many years later when I became a discerning adult.

Oh, I love those. It's like a video game. I actually found one of those on a computer in Fallout3. It's about a barbarian who slays the evil ones.

Right! They're very much like a video game where you could choose an ending. I'm not really into games, so I can't say I've ever heard of Fallout3. Maybe I'll take a look one of these days. Welcome the myLot, btw!

My kids used to love these "choose your own adventure" books, so much so that my son, now married with a baby on the way, found some at a used book store and bought all of them. I don't know who started the idea, but they were brilliant.

Indeed, they're brilliant. And I don't know I just suddenly remembered them. Been more than 15 years that I haven't read one. Maybe if I'd see them at a thrift bookstore, I'd buy 'em too.

When I was a very young child I loved having stories about dolls and teddies read to me. I loved books about life in a different country. When I learned to read I was fond of books about animals. In my teenage years I read books about horses and ponies. Then when I went to university I studied about children's literature. I fond some lovely books about life in World War II. I remember reading adventure books when I was at junior school.

Wow, sounds like you enjoyed reading in your youth. Reading is good. It lets you go to places and even to different time zones. And, yes, I think that young people who read more are smarter than their contemporaries.

Yes, sweet memories from the past! For me, I read all them, so I read all the endings. I had this system of putting numbers on the decision pages so that I knew which pages I had decided last and then go back to that page, and change my decision.

When I was young I also read some of the books where you are able to choose your own adventure, and loved those books. I remember two different kinds of books. In some of the books you "only" had to choose which things the character did and in some of the books it was more like a game where you used two dice and had fight with the monsters that you met. I don't remember the details, but it was quite hard to kill those monsters. There were many traps in the stories and most of the time I didn't survive long enough to solve the mystery and reach the happy ending.

The ones I read were the first ones you described where you just choose what the character would do. The second you described, I think, is what one of our friends above said was the "multi-player" type.

Well, I would be dishonest if I say I didn't like it. But I guess I just like other books better when I was young. I loved reading Archie's Comics Digest. Does that qualify as a book? I used to borrow those from my classmates because back then I cannot afford them. I also loved reading classic stories by notable authors like Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, and the dark stories of Edgar Allan Poe. I read voraciously when I was young. I would read anything. I would even read the contents of newspapers used to wrap the merchandise my mother bought from the market. That could be the reason why even as English is only my second language, I am somehow proficient on it (I hope).

Wow, you read a lot! I also read a lot, but, newspapers? I only read the Cartoons/Comics page. I also loved Archie's Comics Digest. I wouldn't consider it a book (but for us fans, sure we could consider it a book!)

That sounds a lot like Cinderella. But in Cinderella, it was her stepmother, and she had two step sisters. It's good to be exposed to reading even at a young age.
