Have you been mistaken for the sales associate when shopping?

Today, I went to Dollar Tree to purchase some beauty products and to browse around since I had some spare time. I was walking and someone was following me so I just walked in another aisle. He asks me if I knew where the birthday candles were. I just saw them so I pointed it out to him where it was. I didn't even work at the store! I wasn't wearing green shirts, I was wearing gray leggings, blue tank top and a white cardigan with my purse & holding a shopping basket. *TOTALLY WEIRD* He was old too.... there were plenty of workers to ask, gosh! Have you ever been mistaken for the sales associate when shopping?

Yes too funny too because I was at Jewels and although all store associates have uniforms with their names on it and I had on a dress and heels I could not understand why the lady thought I worked there. Maybe she was just in a hurry and a bit frazzled and made the error with the hopes she could hurry. lol

There were times before when that would happen to me everytime I go to the shopping center. I didnt like it at all so I asked myself why but I couldnt find the answer why. So I talked to some of my friends about it and they too have the same experience. They said that it has something to do with how you choose what you're buying cause you look like you are trying to arrange things.

Oh yeah, a couple of times actually. It's really weird especially when you're not even wearing a saleslady/man's uniform. To be fair though, I have mistaken some few people to be salesladies as well. haha.

I have never been mistaken as the sales associate when shopping. Maybe the guy did not see any people around so he thought maybe you know where he could find what he was looking for.

I wonder why some people are embarassed to be mistaken for sales staff, rather than just saying they don't work there, and getting on with their life. I suppose they just think that if someone works in a shop, then they're below them, and don't want to be mistaken for someone that works in a shop. well I work in a shop, and you're not better than me. we're all people. I hate it when people look down on someone for working in a shop.

I don't know if I am going to laugh at this or become irritated. It also happened to me before. Someone thought that I am a sales lady at the supermarket and she is asking me how much the clothes was because it got no tag price, I said I don't know because i'm not a sales lady..lol. I am thinking that day if I look like a sales lady, but what I am wearing is different from them..How could that happened to me?Why I was mistaken as a sales personnel..well i don't know.lol

What is that supposed to mean? I don't work at Dollar Tree and even if I did work there, what does that have to do with anything?

Yes, it happens to me before and I also mistaken someone else as sales staff in the store :D. Both were embarrassing! I told my self I maybe look like a sales staff that time and I need to put some good make up on and wear pretty clothes to not be mistaken. I always wear casual clothes when going out so that maybe the reason.

YEs, that happened to me as well in both situations, of me being mistaken as a shopper and staff. It's more embarassing to be taken as a shopper when i'm actuallyt working there. I'm even in uniform and while greeting the customer in store, there's another woman beside me and the customer assumed it was the other woman greeting her, and not me. It was till the customer start asking questions with no responses, then she realize i'm the staff there, not the other customer. It was quite hilarious back then.

Perhaps the old man, having perceived you to be a constant customer in that store, thought that because of that, you now know almost every products whereabouts. Anyway, yes just lately while doing some shopping, i was asked by a customer " Do you have some leggings of white dark blue color?". I politely told him "i don't know ma'am , because i am a shopper too here" and pointed out a sales person. She immediately apologized. Well, i can understand because the sales ladies were also in their casuals.

Yes, for several times. My office is near a duty free shop and we usually go there during lunch break. Because I am wearing our office uniform, the other shoppers did not think that I am a shopper too.

No, this has never happened to me. But this thing is really very embarrassing and very weired too. When you were not wearing any sales girl outfit even then how come he misunderstood you with the sales girl, may be because of his age.

hi infatuated oh he was "old" too. implying what that old people are of course weird and maybe dunces? Did it not occur to you that he thought if you shopped there a lot that you might know where different things were? is there some implication here that its weird to ask a fellow shopper if he or she happens to know where x item is? I can well believe he had no such idea that you worked there. so my question is is it horrible or weird to ask someone if they know where such and such an item can be found. No at at my "Old" age I have never been mistaken for an employee of any store. I do not often bother other shoppers but if it looks like a person is very familar with the store I might ask if they know what isle the peanut butter is on.

I was wearing my work uniform from Walgreens when I went to Walmart for Black Friday. BAD IDEA!! I didn't even think about the uniforms being nearly the same thing or I would have taken a different shirt to change into. I had people asking me all sorts of questions. I almost bought a shirt to get them away but I ended up surviving with the help of my friends who would see someone heading straight to me and say "She doesnt work here."

Yes, that happened to me too- I think it happened to me three times. ANd one of those times, and old couple asked me in a grocery shop, which is quite understandable since I was wearing the same color as what the sales associate wears there.

Yes, to many times than one, I can't even count. One instance I remember I was in Macys just shopping like a customer would. I was all in the clothes, had clothes in my hand. No business like outfit nor a name tag, yet someone just decided to ask me do I know where such and such is. I'm like no, I don't work here with a smile. I honestly do believe if people would use context clues, they could have figured this out themselves. I had on jeans for goodness sake! But anyway, thats just one of my stories. BTW I love your discussions!

I think this happens a lot, and you shouldn't be offended. I bet you just looked like you knew what you were doing, so that is why the person asked! That is a compliment in my opinion :). I have been on both sides of this but more recently I asked someone at sally's beauty store (a male) where a certain hair color was, and he looked at me like i was an idiot and told me he didn't work there and someone who did could help me a lot more than he could. He was leaning down and it looked like he was restocking the products, so that is why i thought he worked there, but I do pay attention more now. I look at their uniforms and double check before asking anyone for help as I have learned my lesson a couple times now!
