If you could have one limited wish... what would it be?

April 28, 2011 6:50pm CST
Imagine you're given the chance to have one reasonable, limited wish granted. What would it be? By "limited" and "reasonable", I mean you can't wish to be immortal or all-powerful, for example, but you can wish for perfect health until you die. You can't wish for more wishes, either, Mr. Sneakypants. You also can't wish for something that changes the whole world, either (world peace, although it'd be wonderful, is a no-no) - it has to be a single, limited wish for yourself. And don't forget to consider the consequences. (Like the look on your face if you were guaranteed perfect health and got hit by a bus the next day...)

Hello, Spike. I'd really like to become well-known for my writing. I get lots of positive feedback from readers, and I earn a fair bit from it, which is great, but I want more. I'd like to be offered a regular column in a well-known newspaper, and be asked to appear on 'Question Time' or something. I'm never going to be a best- selling author, as fiction is not my forte, but I'd love to be recognised for what I do. Of course, the corrolary with this is that I'd also earn a lot more money and get to travel and meet new people, so it's a sort of multi-faceted wish. Does it still count, and would you want to sleep with me when I'm famous?

I think most writers have a secret wish like that - I know I do! And no, I'm afraid I'm Mr. Faithful and only want to sleep with one person: my lady.

Oh well, I'll just keep plugging away at Helium while I wait to become an 'overnight success.'

I would wish for enough...enough good stuff like health, enough money, enough love, enough contentment, enough happiness...just enough to live a happy life. I don't want an over abundance...just enough to live a comfortable life without excessive worry and stress.

Absolutely brilliant. Such a simple wish, but absolutely perfect. "Enough." I love it. (Incidentally, my lady said she'd wish for the ability to double anything. That works out similar - if you don't have enough, you double it.)

I'd want to win the Lottery Jackpot. Even for just like one time. We have been renting all our life and my mom and I really wishes to have our own of our own where both of us can be finally settled without having to worry in earing the next month's pay for rent. And if ever there is still much left in the money that I won in the lottery, I'd like to study again. This time with photography. Until now, I haven't found a skill in which I know that I am really good at so maybe I can find it in photography. Might as well buy myself a good Canon SLR camera. And after the lessons, after everything is settled. I'll treat my mom to go on vacation to a country of her choice. She has been working hard all her life and she really deserves a good, good break and relaxation. =) I hope my wish is qualified for your discussion.

Mine would be an expense paid month long trip through Europe. I went to Italy a few years ago and I am dying to return and see the other countries as well. It was a wonderful experience that truly changed the way I look at life and how I live it. I came back with a new outlook on life that I feel needs to be refreshed.

Very nice! Since it's a wish, why not make it a yearly occurrence for the rest of your life or something? Maybe a different venue each year...

Oh, I like that one. It's the "any time I want" that makes it so good - open-ended, nice and flexible... good choice!

I want to wish for a perfect career. I will be a supermodel and be very rich and happy. Is that good? This is the only limited wish I can think.

Hmm, nice answer but it wouldn't last, would it? Models (even supermodels) don't generally have a very long career and they get treated pretty badly by the press. Then again, it's a wish, so you could wish for it to last ages and be wonderful all the time..!!

I'd probably wish to be not rich, but financially comfortable for the rest of my life so that I wouldn't have to work so hard.

My wish would be to become more confident in my own abilties and never miss oppurtunities that way, i can live a successful life, the only consequence is 'would i be happy to be sucessful' and what if im too successful that i forget and neglect those close to me sometimes in life we need to balance it out. good question. :)

Wouldn't it be easier to wish for the confidence AND the success?

How dull... and probably one of the best thought-out wishes I've ever heard! With an almost-perfect family ("almost" is a great addition, since perfect would be awful) anything is possible and happiness would be omnipresent. Very good choice, imho.

I would wish for my family to be reunited. For two decades now, we had been a family divided, half in America and the other half in the Philippines. If I had one wish, I'd like us to be together again.

I would wish for a completely free of charge mansion so I could live without paying, and house a bunch of poor people just like a hostel. It wouldn't hurt for it to be on a private beach too. So I could learn to surf without anyone stealing the waves.

Excellent. When I first saw that I thought "Hmm, yeah, I guess" but the more I think about it, the more of a good wish it is. No mortgage. No possibility of losing your home. Nothing to pay, ever, for a roof over your head. Now that's stress-free living!
