need some software advice

i was wondering if there was any free software that i could use to record every thing that i do on my computer to make into video? I've seen some YouTube videos where you see the everything that a person is doing on there computer. is this something that even possible or is it some thing that i'm have to buy a camcorder or webcam to do?
