Do pay per click websites, blogging and review sites kill productivity?

Whilst writing in general can hardly be classed as being unproductive, a lot of people write just to fill niche markets, often things the writer is not interested in at all. It could be on somewhere like the Helium Marketplace or it could be a blog that someone has designed to make money through advertising in a certain niche. The pay is often rather small but considerably larger than on the pay per click websites - the buxes of the world.
Do you think people that want to earn a little extra cash or even consider themselves as entrepreneurs would be better off thinking outside the box rather than spending time on sites such as these.
Are you using these websites only because you can't come up with anything else and simply googled "real ways to earn money online" or do you find it therapeutic to earn a small additional income with sites such as these? Perhaps you like the variety and the social aspect of some of these sites or enjoy developing your own blog. Let me know what you think!
