Silent Hill vs. Resident Evil

Which horror game do you think has better series and movie/s? I think I like Silent hill more because it has better story, different endings, twists and puzzles. Also, the 'scary' factor just gets stuck on the mind, and it took me some time to get over those nightmares. (Especially in silent hill 3, at the amusement park). The music and background is also amazing, it gives a hellish ambiance and affects psychologically. About Resident Evil, the game is more of an action game than survival. The parts that scare me are those that surprises and shocks me, like zombies or monsters suddenly appearing, or those sudden screams. Although Resident Evil got first in making frightening monsters, Silent Hill makes more messed up monsters. However, in the movie, I think I like Resident Evil series. Milla is a great actress, the actions and fight scenes are awesome. The series was long, probably because it's a good hit. Silent Hill movie is good, but the game was scarier. The effects and music are also great.

I agree with you, Resident Evil is more of a thriller themed than a horror themed game. Silent Hill has a deeper plot than Resident Evil. It involves shocking revelations and a kind of augmented reality effect you'll appreciate especially when it comes to the ending. Althoug when I'm playing video games, I want it to have lots and lots of action so I'm going for Resident Evil for this one. I think it would be better if Silent Hill games are made into movies. I know they already made one; what I'm trying to say is it's better to watch them than play them. I remember playing "Silent Hill: The Room" and it already racked my brains out trying to figure out how to get out of the stupid room. The game just isn't worth playing but worth watching, if you know what I'm saying.

Yeah, playing in arcades takes the experience right in front of you. Plus, the sound system is really on there.

yea, I played silent hill 4 too, and it doesn't have that same scary ambiance that silent hill 1 & 2 had..But I like the video quality since the scenes look real. I like games with fighting zombies too, but only in arcades since the screen is big, so it's easier to blast them.

Nah, I think they should leave Silent Hill 2 as it is. Producing a theatrical release of an already made game sucks. I still prefer Resident Evil over Silent Hill. You're right, Silent Hill is made for the thrill but Resident Evil is more exciting with all the action and zombie blasting fun.

About the action part, I think Silent hill wasn't actually inclined to actions because it's more on surviving the twisted world. And when they did made changes in the game to make it more action based, there's that "Silent hill stuff that makes it so freaking hard and awesome" that disappeared. So I guess Silent hill should be about the horror, not the action. I agree with you with the movie though. I also played Silent hill 4, it became action based and seeing the life bar doesn't make it scary anymore. Only thrills and questions about the story. I didn't felt the traditional silent hill ambiance even though the graphics are great. Nevertheless I love the game's story. I actually felt sad for Walter (I got the good ending, lol I took a walkthrough the second time because I screwed up and got Eileen killed) but the twist was nice. I just wished they revealed more about that cult. (If it was related to the previous silent hill one and three.. because the symbol is similar) I also wished they'd make a Silent hill 2 movie, that story was great too, and the twist whether James is just hallucinating the whole ghost town because of (umm..) depression (after regretting everything may be?) or if the whole Silent hill is really monster filled because of the symbolical acts he did before to his wife and the remaining vengeful emotions of his wife.

i like both as videogame series so i can't choose one favourite because silent hill and resident hill are really good and interesting games from different point of view!!As regards movie on the contrary i really dislike both...in reality silent hill i thought it was much better but they choose to change the central character from a man to a woman i did't like this choice...on resident evil movies may eb the first wa snot bad but the other are really awful as plot i surely prefer the videogame original plot than Resident Evil movie versions.

I've only played a few of the two games: Resident Evil 1-3, Silent Hill 2, and Silent Hill Origins. I'd say I love both games and it's hard for me to choose one. I like the real "horror" Silent Hill brings as it deals with the unknown. I love it when the alternate worlds interchange and the one with rusty metal platforms is really scary. The fog effect is also a big plus. The monsters are very creepy, look real weird and twisted, and look really gross. On the other hand, Resident Evil is scary because of the horrible monsters but it's because of a virus, something known to the player. The monsters sure are scary. Hmm, do monsters of RE4 move faster? I think I saw my brother play it once. As for the movies, I've only seen the first Resident Evil movie and I've seen Silent Hill. I'd say I'm not much of a fan of the Resident Evil movies. I wish they had the original characters from the game or adapted the exact story and details. Hmm, my brother had DVDs of the first three movies, maybe I'd give them a try. As for Silent Hill, the movie was good and it's amazing how they created the monsters (the one with barbed wire if I remember it correctly, and the Pyramid Guy) I felt the movie lacking on some aspects compared to the game but I think it's still a good movie. Overall, I like both games but I'll give the horror factor hands down to Silent Hill. As for the movie, I like both but I guess I need to watch them again.

Resident evil 1,2,3,zero and Code Veronica are horror games and I love the desperation to survive of the characters. Resident evil 4 and 5 are generic action shooter games. Capcom betrayed their old fanbase in favor of the casual audience. Silent Hill sticked with the horror roots. I just wish Silent Hill will have a female protagonist again. Controlling Heather is the best experience I ever Had. I mean Harry is a weirdo, James is another Weirdo, Henry is too Emo while Alex and Travis looks like action game characters. Do you know the themesongs of Silent Hill games? they rock!!!

Ahaha, @captain Albert, I laughed so hard when you described the characters. I also think Heather is the only normal character since almost all the others have big problems. Have you even noticed their favorite lines? Have you seen a 7 yr old girl, black hair... And Henry usually says "WTH?".. Haven't played origins and homecoming yet since I'm about to graduate so gaming is slightly forbidden (Silent hill is addictive, I can't study without seeing that other world of mine).. I also love SH songs too :D My favorite are from SH2: Promise(not the reprise) and Theme of Laura.. We played Promise in our arts class project, but since I pitied an idiot who made me regret getting him on the band, he sang so (idk the right term) annoyingly that it destroyed the WHOLE mood. I wanted to kill him. If the world becomes silent hill, he'll be the first victim because he ruined the good song. @Enslin~ I only got to play RE one and two, so I don't know if I'm biased but I think RE is harder since you really have to kill those monsters, while in SH I normally ignore them. The monsters in the movie SH are actually taken from SH2 probably because they're cooler (lol)..just kidding, those monsters have strong symbolic meaning to James(like Pyramid head as an executioner for James' punishment).. I think I found in youtube how they did that barbed wire dude, his legs were actually cut(not literally chopped off) in the computer using those green background and green pants so they were deleted and replaced with the horrific settings.

Well I am owing my opinion on the first resident evil and silent hill game because i am not up to date with silent hill. Well from what i can remember, silent hill is a more dark, scary environment type of game with minimal action packed scenarios. Resident evil is more action packed, sudden horror action kind of game. I have felt a little scared playing silent hill but not with resident evil but i was startled a lot by resident evil but not silent hill.

Older Resident evil games actually have horror going on but Resident evil 2 and 3 have action and fast paced. But Resident evil 1 remake, Code Veronica and Zero are kinda like silent Hill, slow paced horror. In case of Resident evil 4 and 5 though, those games are nothign but action as in no more horror left and the puzzles were dumbed down. Silent Hill sticks with horror until Silent Hill 5 (which is action based) But due to negative fan reaction Silent Hill decided to goes back to horror.

was silent hill 5 the homecoming or was it shattered memories. I got to play shattered memories, I liked the story but it doesn't feel anything like silent hill at all because all you get to do is run. It's actually pretty easy that I get to finish the game in less than a day. (in my 2nd play ofcourse I know the path already) And the puzzles were kind of too easy.

I am into Silent Hill. I love the story and the game play. I agree that it is a lot scarier than Resident Evil. I love the suspense playing Silent Hill game at night. I will surely miss this one. I also love Resident Evil because of Jill Valentine. n_n

(First sorry for the wall of text) I love the first 5 Resident evil games (Resident evil 1,2,3,zero, Oubtreak and code veronica) because It started the survival horror craze and I love zombies but Resident evil 4 and 5 sucks as Resident evil (they were good action games) Resident evil gives me the interest with horror games and I actually think its story is better than silent hill and the protagonist of the first g games are relatable and not insane. I dont like the resident evil movies because it ruined the games and its the reason why Resident evil is not a horror game anymore because the movies are action. Though I hate the movies, I just accepted their existence since their fans dont affect the fanbase of the games, its 2 different entities. (if you will go to Resident evil communities, the fans of the games hates the movies but they already accepted the fact that a resident evil game with a real resident evil character as main character instead of Alice will never happen.) Silent Hill, I play all Silent Hill games too, I love the fact its scarier but what I hate about it is the fact that it only have 1 female protagonist in its history and I believe horror games are better with female protagonist, so Silent Hill 3 is my Favorite Silent Hill game because Heather is not the cliche game protagonist. she is a normal teenager (who happens to be the reincarnation of the demon in Silent hill 1) I love playing SIlent Hill because it tackles the personal demons of the main character, all monsters the protagonist will fight are personification of their darkside. What I love about silent Hill is they stayed with their horror roots, Unlike Resident evil which is now an action game with kung fu fighting. Also the best thing in silent Hill are the theme songs.

I think I also don't like the idea that Alice will be in the game. The movie barely showed that Alice had a real difficult time fighting zombies and surviving. Umm..I also think that the Silent hill characters are usually insane (most of them) are because there is a subtle twist that these guys are actually fighting their inner sanity rather than real horrifying ghouls.. like you said, they are fighting their dark side. To bad though both the games became more action filled than survival horror.. the essence of surviving lessened a bit and the feeling of uncertainty in some rooms or buildings are actually gone if not reduced. I also loved the music of silent hill. There is real striking emotions that makes me feel sad and sometimes weak and vulnerable. I just love Akira Yamaoka's music :)

These are both amazing games, great franchises. However, you mentioned the concept of horror. I believe that Res Evil is much more a game of action mingled with horror. Silent Hill, this is designed purely for horror fans. The environment as well as the puzzles in this game keep you really engrossed. Pyramid head is fantastic! I love and adore both franchises. However, Silent Hill has more of an aspect of horror. It would be cool, though, to find Garrador from Resident Evil invade Silent Hill and Fight Pyramid head!
