Hi, all I just made a discussion about washing your hands in public restrooms. I had a few mylotters respond with the use of using hand sanitizers is another effective way in the prevention of spreading germs. Once before my sister and I had this talk about hand sanitizers and are they 100% effective. I'm really not sure, I would prefer to wash my hand opposed to just using a hand sanitizer. They are definitely handy, I'm not saying I've never use one, but my preference would be good ole soap and warm water. What about you? Do you think hand sanitizers are 100% effective?

To each its own. Hand sanitizers are really great for hospitals I'm sure. When you have to deal with sick people on the regular. You can't get go to the bathroom and wash your hands every minute. Unwashed jus wondering if it was 200% effective. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Keshia, of course hand washing is more effective than hand sanitizers. Hand washing with soap and water can really wash away dirt and of course microorganisms that can cause diseases if done properly. Hand sanitizers may do also but we usually use it even if our hands are dirty and so the dirt still stays though some of the germs might be killed but still it is not 100 percent clean. Hand sanitizers are practical to carry everyday because we can eliminate some germs from our hands anytime even if there are no water and soap around.

Understood, I was just wondering because one mylotter said they would rather use a hand sanitizers then soap and water after using the restroom and its just as good.

I suppose we can't really tell if they are effective or not as we don't know what germs we would or wouldn't have contracted had we not used the santisizer. I do use them though just in case, plus they are very useful to have and take to places where there are no hand-washing facilities.

My hand sanitizer is 99% effective and kills germs 99%. This is what is says. But yes they are effective.

I guess it depends on the brand you are using. So probably you just have to choose those trusted once. Maybe, this may not be 100% effective but it still a good item to keep yourself away from germs :)

I agree, I would jus prefer soap and water. Hand sanitizers is a good use for on the go. And as you said anything is good as long as it prevents you from germs.

I believe that hand sanitizing is very effective. nothing can ever be 100 percent, but this is the closest we can get to it. i am quite satisified with hand sanitizers.

Yes, i think that hand sanitizers are able to help clean the hands but they won't make your hands a hundred percent germ free.

I think soap and water is just as good as these fancy hand sanitizers are. We need to remember that we need to keep some good bacteria around and these hand sanitizers it all. And they can be costly. I will just continue to use my usual soap and tapid water like I have been for nearly sixty years. The big thing is remembering to wash or use the sanitizer!

I don't think hand sanitizer is 100%. It says it kills 99% of germ. I rarely use it. I wash my hands after I use the bathroom and when I am in the kitchen. Especially when I am working with food. I'm not worried abour germs. I am appauled by people who use the bathrooms and don't wash their hands! I think it is sick!

Hi Keshia, if you are traveling to remote area where washing hand with soap and water is impossible, then using hand sanitizer makes sense. The first time I rely heavily on hand sanitizer was when I traveled to remote region in China for holiday long ago. The scenery was spectacular. However, the hygiene standard was not. The public toilet meant a wooden hut for the whole town. You just squat on two planks, and the waste material fell into the deep hole. There was no water, no soap for hand washing. The smell was horrible, and the place was so disgusting.

I use soap and water too. Besides, even though I am very careful to keep my kitchen and bathroom very clean, I am aware that it is even healthy to be in contact with some dirt instead of living in a sanitized bubble. Our body needs to learn about foes in small quantities so our immune system prepares for them.

Ia m sure that they do help, but not 100 percent because you know it just can't be like that because their will always be germs no matter what we can never get rid of them all. My health teacher says that when you use it the first tome they are very effective, but after that not so much, but she does carry one around. I am guessing that she likes them because they do help somewhat better than nothing. Anyway you should try them. I have also used them I like them for the most part. I pretty much use them when their is no more soap in the bathroom and I don't want to have my hands dirty because than I would feel gross and that right there is not a good feeling at all. Anyway good luck in keeping your hands clean. Oh forgot to mention my health teacher also said that when you wash your hands at a restroom that you are washing away the old germs and then your hands will be introduced to new germs that can actually be harmful or harmless. One never really knows, but yeah good luck.

hi keshia! Using a hand sanitizer i don't think that it is a 100% ,because as you can see in the pack of the sanitizer you can see 90 to 80 % so i think using sanitizer is safe but it is more safer if you use a soap and water.if you do not have any option to use a soap and water you can also use this like if you are outside the house , in the park or you are with friends but if you are in you house it is much more better to use a water and a soap .

i could make a guess, about 99 percent.... as much as possible i prefer washing , because washing actually gets rid of the dirt, not just kill the bacteria...i think hand sanitizers kill the bacteria but not totally remove the dirt or residue on the hand. but on most occasions i think hand sanitizers work just fine. for me.

I think using hand sanitizers are quite effective in getting our body clean up. It might not be completely effective but it certainly helps in getting us away from deadly bacteria or germs

I do both. If I go somewhere that looks and feels disgusting, then I will use handsanitizer. At work, when we didn't have time to wash our hands after touching, or if a customer wanted to hold them, then we advise them to use it. What I been reading is that the sanitizer is only 99.9% effective. I usually wash and dry my hand and use the sanitizer knowing that the other 1% of germs is gone. So, do both to be on the safe side. Everything we touch has some kind of parasite, bacterium, viruses, or antigent. Yep, some are good, but most are bad. However, too much use of handsantizer isn't good, because it kills the good cells in your skin to fight off those mention above, and in a way lowers the immune system slightly. Use like everything else in moderation.
