We all have to deal with a lot of stress in our lives and during these times we will notice that we have different ways that we cope with these stressors in our lives. Since I've been going through more stress than usual, I've noticed a coping method coming out in my life. My coping mechanism at this point in time in my life is retail therapy (in other words, shopping). This could easily be a bad thing, but I've been doing shopping through Amazon because I have gift cards and also clearance shopping. What about you. What is your coping mechanism and do you think it is healthy or not.

I used to eat a lot whenever I'm stress. I made a discussion before about stressed=desserts. :) Desserts are my comfort food whenever I'm stress and burned out. I also do shopping. I actually have what I call, stress budget. I use it every time I'm totally burned out. And need pampering. Like sauna, spa, new haircut, etc.

When I was younger, eating was my main coping mechanism. I actually think that is a big part of the reason that I struggle so much with my weight now because of mistakes that I made when I was younger. With that said, I find that these days I don't want to eat at all when I am going through stress in my life. There is nothing like going from one extreme to the other.

my stress coping tablet is internet though its true that too much using it also creates a kind of stress...which we may not realize as we love using it...and another thing is listening to music...but that also on internet..becoz when i want to listen music...i love it is of great variety....

I guess that might be where the game that I am addicted to comes into play. It is just mindless playing.

I use the internet on a daily basis so I don't really think about it as being a mechanism for helping to relieve stress. However, now that you mention it, you are right that I do use the internet to help me to relieve some of my stress.

Dora, my sincere prayers for you and I know things will be better soon. I know, how you must be feeling right now. Dealing with emotional stress can be very painful. It's good that you are channelizing into shopping. Shopping can be fun. Finding the right thing to do that will relieve you is hard to figure out. I could never find the right way except for the adage, 'this, too, shall pass' - nothing kind of works.

I know that things are going to be better for us soon as well. However, in the mean time I need to take things one day at a time and not make things too odd at home for the sake of the children. Right now, they and Tom are the most important things to me and I need to do whatever I can to protect them all.

My coping mechanism used to be my drive home from work. It is that particular time where I could be alone in the car, and look forward to seeing my kids at home. It is a way to de-compress, from all the stress from work. But since I've moved to a new job which is only a couple minutes drive from home, I've had to find a new way to cope with stress. For the past week, I've been staying up late at night until everybody is asleep. There is something to be said about hearing yourself think. It relaxes me a bit.

I am also a person that tends to stay up later than everyone else in my house so that I have my own little bit of quiet time before I go to bed.

I just sit back and really just sit there, not doing anything for a while. One would really be surprised with how well this works in coping with stress. Or maybe not. Still there needs to be a moment of reflection. A moment to sit back and to take a deep breath. Several deep breaths if I can manage it. It is not the end of the world, the world is not over, I just need to relax, relax, well try to anyway. Needing to relax and actually relaxing are two different things. Of course, there are times where a nice solid book is something that is going to take my minds. Also a video game if you are into that thing. I don't know, there is just something that relieves stress than mashing buttons and potentially bashing virtual people. Of course, music does tend to sooth the savage beast as the saying goes. There are many times of stress in the world. Just got to deal with it the best I can. Sometimes its just best to really sit back and reflect, before getting together what we have accomplished and what needs to be done.

I do think that you are right when you say that there are different things that will work for different people. What works for me might not be the same thing that is going to work for the next person. However, I also think that there are some things that can be done that will work for almost everyone.

I prefer fresh air well usually the places or things that stress me out are in reality as a precaution : escape from reality : going far out , taking a bath , sleeping - any way of distracting doesn't do it unless I one-track my mind on something relaxing/addictive

Getting outside is something that does help me out as well. However, the weather hasn't cooperated really well in allowing me to do this recently. However, when my son has baseball games, it is a great help to me.

When I am under stress, I releive myelf by reading afavourite book of mine.I would even pick up a favourite book and read it for the umpteenth time but my mind would be very much at ease and I would feel happy.

I don't particularly think of reading as a way of dealing with extreme stress that I experience in my life. However, reading before I go to bed is something that I have done since I was a child so that I can unwind from the day.

Mine is to lie back on the sofa and listen to some very relaxing (quiet!) music, or have no radio/tv/music playing and just listen to the sounds of nature, letting my mind go free and wander where it wants to.

In that way I am different because when I am stressed, quiet is really not something that I am able to deal with too well because it makes me think more about the things that are bothering me.

here lately mines been kind of shopping also, but not the same kind. ive gotten on Listia and its kind of fun. you make credits from auctioning off things you dont want any more, so you can bid on things you do. the only thing that i havent managed yet is to figure how much credits to ask for and also the money you are out when you can go to the post office. first time i was out 30 bucks. not realizing how much postage has raised. but now im getting somewhat better since im getting things sent free back and also not putting up such large things. we get credits for refering people to. if you'd like to try it, i'll send you my referral through pm.

I joined listia during the Christmas season, but I haven't been back over there for a while. I really need to go back because I really think it is a neat site. Added to that, I've got some things that I've been coming across that the children no longer use that I would be able to send to a new owner through the site.

I swear at people. Loudly. But, I rarely ever experience stress, because I take products to help with that kind of stuff.

I save all my online earnings to travel once a year. I feel that is a big part of my mental health. I like to see new things, forget about the every day routine that is a big part of my stress. Happy posting!

Right now our family is working our way out of a hole of debt that we put ourselves into earlier in our relationship, so I am using my online earnings to make sure and do special things for the children. However, when we do finally put an end to our debt, I will start saving to do something special for myself.

For me, the reason that I've been stressed is because of medical news that we've gotten about my husband. However, I do experience some stress and cabin fever during this time of the year regularly because of school coming to an end and all of the rain that we typically get during the spring.

Those are things that are important to do when you are facing stressors in your life. Is there anything specific that you do so that you are able to give more time to yourself?

As stressed as we are in life we forget that we only have one life. When I get stressed I focus in on that I only have one life to live. SO WHY WASTE IT?! I get out and take a walk see the world. I will also listen to music that I feel has real direction. Even Youtube is full of exciting things to learn and see. I think that this coping mechanism is a healthy one.

Youtube has also been a great coping mechanism for me as well through some of the major stressors that I've been through in my life. Last year one of my closest friends passed away and during that time I listened to a lot of music through youtube.

Mine is eating usually.. which is only bad for my waistline.. and sometimes the wallet. Obviously I'd save money if I didn't have such an appetite.. but I guess it could always be worse.

When I was a teenager and my father passed away, eating was the way that I coped with everything that I was going through. That is a big part of the reason that I am still struggling with my weight today.

When I'm dealing with stress, I love to be alone, I just can't stand noisy places when I'm having stress. What I usually do is to stay home and listen to music, my choice will be in classical to soothe my mood. It really helps me stress out.Listening music and a cup of lemon water helps me relieve the stress in me.And while listening to music I use to read some books of my interest and that makes me back to mood. Well, shopping through is also a good way to cope up with stress I guess.Maybe I would try it sometimes. Have a nice day!

I'm not so much the person that likes to be alone when I am dealing with a lot of stress because I am the kind of person that feels very alone when there is no one around me. However, when I am dealing with things and I'm alone, music is definitely a form of therapy for me.

Nice to hear you have been able to shop with gifts cards, that is always fun. I engage in extra exercise and take walks when things get to be a bit too much. I also like to put on headphones and listen to music as it allows me to imagine me with the flow of the rhythm. Anything that will stop my brain from concentrating and thinking so much on the issues and or stress.

I manage my coping mechanism by traveling with my friends. It is more effective to me to travel any places with friends than just going to the mall, shopping etc.

Travelling is something that I really like to do, but it has never been something that is really feasible for me which is the reason that I don't use travel as a coping mechanism.
