How to optimize your sites ranking on searh engine?

Which is also known as SEO. But i think SEO is a bit higher level since people are paying high fee to learn about the method and make more money with their knowledge.. It would be nice if anyone from mylot can suggest other alternative to boost my page ranking on search engine results that is more simple for a beginner like me?
1. Does the number of my target keywords in my articles content helps?i.e mention certain keyword that i have targeted based on adwords search results repeatedly?
2. Does backlink registration helps to increase my search results?

Well i don't think number of keywords effects,infact optimizing sites for more keywords are difficult so use 2-3 keywords for each page.Put links to your keyword.Ofcourse content is most important part for achieving PR.Updating your contents on regular basis.Backlinks are extremly important to increasing PR.You can do some link building techniques for getting some quality backlinks like article submission,directory submission,blog commenting,e.t.c.

The first and best thing is to update daily your blog or site with good content. It is said to be 'content is the king'.

Both the things that you have listed are helpful specially links as search engines have stopped believing meta data that much.
I don't know why everyone is running behind SEOs while you can make it big on your won as well. Just let the audience do the publicity for you... Help your target netizens in getting what they want and you will be blessed.
