Earlier today, my friend and I talked about the royal wedding. She told me that she didn't really care about it that much and so did I. As a matter of fact, I even told her that I didn't know what Kate's last name was. When I brought that up, I realized that I didn't know what Prince William's last name was even though he was really famous. So I asked my friend as well. Guess what? Like me, she didn't know as well. Then I asked my Mom. I was hoping she would know because she normally has knowledge on things like that, but to my surprise, she didn't know as well. It's funny, Prince William is Royalty and so is his family. But what is the family's family name? Can someone tell me?

The Royal Family's surname is Windsor. It was changed from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha during the First World War because it was thought not appropriate for the British monarch to have a German name at the time.

Actually, Prince William's last name is Mountbatten-Windsor because the Queen decided to add the name of her husband, so all of her descendants bear that name.

The name "Saxe-Coburg-Gotha" (or, more correctly, "Saxe-Coburg and Gotha") was Prince Albert's surname and Queen Victoria took that name when she married him. Before that, she was a Hanover. Royal Family names are really titles, rather than surnames, and they can be added to with a hyphen or changed completely at will much more easily than a commoner can change their name.

What a "bitty" answer this is! You can read about the correct designations here: http://www.royal.gov.uk/ThecurrentRoyalFamily/TheRoyalFamilyname/Overview.aspx Prince William is of the HOUSE of Windsor but, because his mother decided to add Prince Philip's name to the surname of her descendants in 1960, his SURNAME is Mountbatten-Windsor and that is how it shows in the marriage register. The Duchess of Cambridge is therefore now Catherine Mountbatten-Windsor.

Those are his christian (or 'given') names and he will usually sign himself as "William" (the Royal Family rarely use their house name or surname when signing documents) but his full name is William Arthur Philip Louis Mountbatten-Windsor and that is what appears in the marriage register at Westminster Abbey.
