All characters in Dota are really good if you know how to use them well with skills and what items are fit for them. For me I like Ursa Warrior and Axe. Ursa warrior because he is just good in melee attacks and Axe because he could be a good and strong tanker or thanker. (whatever you call that ) If you are playing the newer version, try Tuskar, he is fun to use. My personal favorite for long range attacks is Dwarven sniper. I just like him.

Yeah, i've tried tuskarr but i think he's way too imbalance. i mean the fast cooldown of his ultimate. i also agree with you about sniper. i've been practicing with it lately and it's easy to manage. thanks!

Well every hero has a role to play but what you are looking for is an overall hero meaning can do defending, attacking, rushing, and catching up with running heroes.
Well they are only a few but the easiest to play is akasha.

I think one of the most powerful DOTA hero is the Centaur War Chief. It has Stun and high damage skills. It can also deflect damage for farming creeps and neutral. The ultimate skill level six is one the most powerful that has high strength bonus and makes it very difficult to kill.

If your a new player and want to cover the areas like rushing, pushing, hero killing & etc. I think razor would be best for you it's easy to use and lets you practice in your hero movements and fast skill casting. But all this tip is based on the fact that you are still new.
Personally now I think the facless void hero is one of the best characters in dota. Hope this helps

Vengeful Spirit, although I haven't gotten used to the increased cooldown on magic missile yet.Makes for some awkward situation. .

I think that there isn't a hero to beat them all or to outrun them, I think it's all about your abilities and u need to find the hero that best describes your style of game. Although i plaied with most heroes I only play well with few like: Void, Kunkka, Nevermore and Atropos, and a few others. With the rest I hardly deal so this is my opinion. Of course u can be better with most of them if u have the dexterity and the patience to learn them all at their best. Cheers

As a new player starting out in DotA, it is normal to be curious on who is the most powerful hero.
I used to ask that question myself when I was first starting out years back.
But as soon as you keep playing the game, and know the styles and strategies behind it, you will start to see that there is actually no most powerful hero in DotA. Like the comments said above, each hero has their own strengths and weaknesses. Some are good at some points, others are weak at some points. Every hero in DotA has a counter hero for it. That is what makes DotA so fun and strategic.
Keep on playing and I'm sure you will have some of your own favorites. And practice your heroes well.
Again, there is NO most powerful hero in DotA. Sure, there are some imbalanced heroes, like Tuskar maybe, but there is always a counter to every hero.
And every version of DotA becomes more and more balanced.

Most powerful hero in the game.... that would be any hero that played its role properly and outplayed the adversary. When the teams are pretty much at the same level, it goes down to how the players built for the end-game. It is not unusual to see that one or two of hte heroes do not engage that much while the other three handle the defense (and/or attack) early in the game to give way to the end-game hitters. It also depends on how you outfitted items into the hero.
If we take the heroes at level 25, no items, and pit them against one another... it will really depend on how you lay out your skill :)

The most powerful heroes usually are those that are in the agility type of heroes where they are good carry heroes that can be depended on middle or late game. Those heroes always decide the outcome of the game. I would probably choose SF or shadow fiend because it can really be annoying hero during early, middle, and late games.
