Here are some ideas for you on how to make extra money with this method,
1. You must understand what are the key factor that will make your domains sellable
a) domain is the most essential part that determine your search results. so think of name that has possibility to get high search results.
b) Choose popular suffix like .com .org .net. This are also important factor. But .com are easier to sell.. you can also purchase specific suffix based on who is your target customer.
2. Domain registration. Once you have successfully purchase a domain for minimum 1 year, start to promote your domain within the period.
3. Do some research on sites where you can sell your domain like ebay,Afternic, Ezdomainauction etc
4. How much can u make? From my last research, Someone sold engineering.org for $198,895 isn't that crazy or what???
Cheers!

Wow!! that is a crazy price for a domain name! I have been thinking of selling domains as a way to try & improve my online income. I agree with the important factors you have mentioned & I have no creativity left in me to come up with sellable domain names lol.

Making big money selling domains is hard unless you have big money to buy a popular domain and turn it over for a profit.
Unfortunately, all the well-known or simple domain names such as engineering.org are long gone.
Do not invest in weird-sounding or convoluted domain names. Try to keep it as simple as possible, those are the ones that will sell.

haha... that's a good one Caira. I might actually try out your tip. I have two domain names that's been picking dust already but I never really thought of selling it coz I was thinking maybe I can still used it when I expand creating websites. Anyway, Thanks for that info. However, have you yourself actually did that selling domain thing already and were you able to profit from it??

cairalyssa, yes, domains are cheap except for the really simple names and popular ones because someone already owns them and everyone wants them. That is why they sell for so much. Yes, I do know why a domain using 'engineering' is expensive. THAT is my point. That is why I said "Do not invest in weird-sounding or convoluted domain names. Try to keep it as simple as possible, those are the ones that will sell". But good luck trying to find a simple keyword domain for $9. They aren't available.
If you can grab a domain name of a franchise that's growing, do it ASAP, but I'll bet they already have it.

Selling domain names is a great business concept, but just like all things on the Internet - it's not quite as easy as it seems. Sure there are some like the example that you've given who earn a hundred thousand megabucks - but that's the exception not the rule.
Truth is, it can takes years to build up the value of a domain name to the point where it will be valuable enough to make a huge profit. Anybody likely can buy a $10 domain name and turn around and sell it to some willing buyer for like $50 to $100 bucks, but to strike is rich is a long shot.
BUT if you're prepared to put the work into what it takes to build up a domain these days with all the competition, then you might have a chance of making some good profit. Be prepared to master SEO in order to build traffic to your domain to boost its alexa rating, build PR of your domain which could take years, build traffic to your domain and popularity and interest to your domain to name a few.
Heck, by the time you put all the work it takes to really build up a domain in this day & age, you might find that you just want to keep it yourself and grow it into your own money-making site!

Did you think that you can just purchase a new domain, promote it and sell it. You must be kidding me, selling domain for profit doesn't work that simple. If you purchase a new domain and don't do anything then its now called a parked domain. Parked domain is just nothing, it doesn't even worth 1 cent without traffic and many more internet thing.

:) Let me give you a scenario
Let say i am a CEO of company ABC that make not big, lets say 1 mil per year. And someone approach to sell their domain with my business name on it, at reasonable price. I will definitely buy that DOMAIN only.
Selling establish website (domain + hosting) is also another great business. But that is more complicated.

of course it is, investing in forex also is big deal, but you gotta know very well what you are doing rite? Those who are making money with this method are also called domain broker.. me myself, will not invest much of my money to buy domain and hold on to it for long.unless if i find one that i know EXACTLY are sellable.
you gotta be good understanding SEO,Keywords,Backlinks,Competitions and more things that related to this..

Thanks for the input. Do you have personal experience selling domains or is it hear say? I have heard you can make money selling domains but you have to know all the secrets, and have the tools. Its very hard and as Im learning it takes alot of hard work to make money online it isn't just a piece of cake. It's very time consuming.
