Just wondering. How do dual and quad core processors are more efficient from their single core brethren. Because I'm thinking of getting a T-mobile G2X?

Single core processors have one core in one chip.
Dual core processors have two cores in one chip.
Quad core processors have four cores in one chip.
Essentially, the more cores your processor have the better performance.
A single core processor must take the incoming data bits one at a time, process that bit of data and move to the next one. Dual core processor detects incoming data stream and determines whether they could be calculated faster if both cores are working. If that's the case, the dual core processor will split the data and process it at the same time thus doubling the processors speed. So if you have a 1.6GHz dual core processor, the total maximum processing speed is 1.6Ghz x 2 = 3.2GHz. Dual core processors are of great use in "processor intensive" applications such as multimedia processing and computer gaming. :)

I agree with everything you say, except for your one statement:
1.6Ghz x 2 = 3.2gGhz
THAT IS NOT TRUE.. Just because you have 2 cores does not mean you can double performance of the core. I think you misunderstood the concept of multicores.
So are you saying if you have quadcore, it is 1.6 Ghz x 4 = 6.4 Ghz???
Of course not!
Multicores, say 2 cores or dual core for example, means that you have 2 cores working on your tasks, that is why it feels faster, instead of just one. But it does not mean you can just times 2 its overall performance.

I hope you know processor comes with different speeds. Like 2.4Ghz, 3GHz etc. So in a single processor the speed is limited to 2.4Ghz. But in multicores such as Dual Core, Quad Core, i-series processor. The speed gets multiplied by the number of cores. So if you are doing some heavy stuffs like working with MAYA,LOGIC or even playing games like CRYSIS you will need processors with good speed. So Multi-core processors are always one step ahead of single-core processors.

I didn't mean any offense. I just wanted to elaborate the explanation :)

The more cores the more info can be processed simutaniously that's the basic idea so go for double. But if a mobile is good or not depends on software and system. I have htc tattoo with touch screen and am exploring it more than average user would but i suggested my gf to buy ericsson elm where you at least have flash and 5 mill cam and you can write a sms faster. Would not buy a "smart" phone if i knew how dumb some things are. Basically people develop interesting applications but basic things you need are even worse than in older phones.

If you use multicore processors, the one thing that you enjoy is more speed. If one processor is busy and you want to perform a few more tasks, then these tasks are performed by the processors that are free. This way you will get greater speed.Cheers,..

Just think of the old quote: "Two heads are better than one"
Having multi core processors, say 2 cores, allows your computer to have 2 brains, logically, improving its performance.
